BIHAR STATE LEGISLATURE AND

BIHAR STATE LEGISLATURE AND
INDIAN DEMOCRACY

Wednesday (21st July, 2010) marked shameful day in the history of Indian democracy. The picture of congress legislator Jyoti kumari smashing a flower pot outside the Bihar legislative is reflective of the level to which our lawmakers have stooped.

The opposition members in the Assembly threw chairs, paper weights and microphones. An MLA even hurled a slipper at the speaker. The unruly MLA’s should be disqualified, not just suspended.

We need to enact a law which defines legitimate protest peoples issue should be discussed in an appropriate manner to find meaningful solutions. MLA’s should show some respect to taxpayers, whose money spent on conducting legislative business.Jyoti Kumari is the right person to participate in ‘save’ the greenery’s programmes in her constituency!. We hope the photograph will urge people to think twice before they cast their votes.

BIHAR LEGISLATIVE ASSEMBLY

BIHAR LEGISLATIVE ASSEMBLY

The photo of the women legislator Jyoti Devi hurling a flower pot outside the Bihar Legislature was shocking ( 22nd July,2010) such legislators should be expelled from not only the house but also their party. What kind of example are they setting for the next generation of politicians? The shameful incident has further dented the already bad image of our politicians.

We proudly claim that India is the biggest democracy but the Bihar legislators have shown that our representatives do not have a mature democratic behaviour. Throwing slippers destroying flower pots and using unparliamentarily language reflect their immaturity.

Everybody enjoys the right to protest, but it should be done in a democratic manner

TERRIBLE TRAIN OF ACCIDENTS

TERRIBLE TRAIN OF ACCIDENTS

At least 67 persons were killed and 121 injured when the new Cooch Behar sealdah uttarbanga express rammed the Vananchal express at Sainthia station (West Bengal) in the early hours of Monday 19th July 2010.

The engine of the Uttar banga Express and parcel van and two general compartments of the vanachal express were completely destroyed. The drivers of the Uttar banga Express and the guard of the Vananchal Express were among those killed.

Railway minister mamta Banerjee visited the accident site and announced an exgratia of Rs 5 lakh to the relatives of those killed and a job to one from each bereaved family.

Fourteen railway accidents in ten months, the second in west Bengal in two months. This time the Railways cannot blame the Maoists.

The stream of accidents in recent months is a stark reminder that the Indian Railways need to do substantially more to ensure safety and security on the tracks. Whether it was a signal failure or a human error this time, the Railway administration must urgently address the key issues- the modernisation of safety equipment, the maintenance of track and signals, the failure of top management to put in place state of the- art fail- safe mechanism, and the retraining and fitness of the staff, especially drivers, their assistants, guards, and those at the stations to prevent the recurrence of such mishaps.

Chief Minister of the West Bengal Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee expressed his deep sorrow over the deaths in the train accident. The chief minister underlined the need for a serious look in to matters related to proper maintenance and ensuring safety of passengers by the authorities concerned.

AMERICA REFUSED TO MEDIATE ON KASHMIR

AMERICA REFUSED TO
MEDIATE ON KASHMIR

U.S Secretary of the state Hillary Clinton on Monday 19th July, 2010, described her country’s present engagements with Islamabad as an enduring commitment that would out live the war on terror. Ms Clinton refused to mediate on Kashmir. Ms Clinton made it clear that the U.S was not interested in mediating on Kashmir issue, and India and Pakistan would have resolved the issue through talks.

India- Pakistan relation has been a lot of turbulence in recent times. India talks of punishing those behind the Mumbai terror attacks and Pakistan complains about violation of the Indus water Treaty. India brings up cross border infiltration. Pakistan plays out the Baloch card and so on.

India insists on action against terrorists and the elimination of terror groups operating from Pakistan. Pakistan’s main concern is Kashmir. The endless rounds of India Pakistan talks in good but result is zero.

WASTE PLASTIC TO BE USED

The Public Works Department (PWD) would initiate steps to use plastic for laying roads.

Finance Minister Mr T.M Thomas Isaac said trials conducted jointly by institutions, including the government Engineering College, Thiruvananthapuram, National Transportation Planning and Research Centre (NATPAC) and the Kochi corporation, had led to the discovery that plastic could indeed be used for laying roads.

The government would soon set up a committee comprising technical and environmental experts like RVG Menon and Kuncheria Isaac to suggest the criteria and methods in which plastic should be used for the purpose.

Machines to recycle plastic waste in to plastic powder or granules would be installed in all local governing body institutions and kudumba sree units.

The PWD would purchase the powder or granule from these units while the suchitwa mission would provide financial and technical support.

RABINDRANATH TAGORE

“Where the mind is without fear and the head is held high
Where knowledge is free, where the world has not been
Broken up in to fragments by narrow domestic walls..
In to that heaven of freedom, my father, let my country awake”

These immortal words were written by an Indian who stood tall in the world of Literature. His writings were translated and read all over the world. He wrote poems, plays, essays, stories and novels. He wrote and tuned songs. He was also an artist and patriot. He was the Indian poet Rabindranath Tagore.

Rabindranath Tagore once travelled on a ship along with the great Irish poet, Y.B Yeats. During the journey he showed him his poems, reaching London, Yeats called a meeting of renowned writers and asked the Indian poet to read out his poems to them. When he finished reciting, no one said a word” They don’t like it” thought Tagore. Actually, the English men were speechless with emotion. And then the room filled with applause. Tagore’s poetry had reached the world.

Tagore also met the Scientist Albert Einstein in Germany. The two men talked of science and Nature, and the nature of things. Tagore received the Nobel Prize. He was also given a knighthood by the British Empire, but he returned it two years later when the British massacred Indians at Jallianwala Bagh. Tagore was a reformer and wrote against social ills. He wanted Independence for India, and was a big source of inspiration for Mahatma Gandhi and other freedom fighters.

Tagore was born in 1861 in a rich and prominent family of Calcutta. His father was Maharishi Debendranath Tagore, a scholar and social reformer. His mother Sarada Devi died when he was very young. He was the youngest child. The servants used to beat the children regularly. In such a large house hold, Rabin dranath was in many ways a loner, and wrote his poem when he was eight. When he was 17, a friend published a collection of his poems, surprising him.

Rabindranath Tagore was like a lake, brimming with lotuses. But besides the lotus, there were other flowers too, colourful and bright, pure and white, dark and light. From his creative flow, there bloomed not just poetry, but also musical dramas about a brave new society, and stories of courage and love, and songs that urge us to celebrate the joy of life. He started painting pictures very late in life. By the time he died at 80 years of age, he had taught us that one man can achieve so much with the dream of a child.

KASHMIR PROBLEM

KASHMIR PROBLEM

Kashmir is moving from one crisis to another. Unfortnately 20 lives, mostly of youngsters, have been lost in the street protests and the confrontation  between the security forces and the civilian population. The lack of a clear cut action plan and political will  to tackle the violence has only worsened the situation. The centre should  initiate talks with the separatists if it  wants to find a viable solution to the Kashmir issue. The youth are becoming increasingly cynical and aggressive because of the  state goverments policy. Unemployment is  one of the main reasons for the unrest. The civilian govermence is ineffective in Kashmir.
The PDP, main opposition party in Kashmir, staged away from the all part meeting convened by the chief minister Omar Abdullah to discuss the volatile situation.PDP president  Mehbooba Mufte rejected PrimeMinister Manmohan Singh’s appeal to attend the all party meeting. This  is not the time to indulge in politicking. The state is on boil. The Army has been deployed. All stake holders should do their best to prevent the separatist forces from fishing in trobled waters.

WORLD POPULATION DAY(JULY-11)

WORLD POPULATION DAY(JULY-11)
The population stabilisation was extremely important, given that India has a share of 17 percent of the world’s population, while it has to make do with a mere 2.5 percent of global land.
The central government would try to stabilise the population by making the people aware of the benefits of small families. Strict implementation of the laws governing the age of marriage and delayed first child with proper spacing may help in dealing with the populatioin problem. The craving for male child was another problem, but the spread of education, especially among girls, would help.
Population Education club of the St. Gregorios College, Kottarakara conducted an education Seminar at College Auditorium on 10th July,2010. Prof John Kurakar inaugurated the seminar. MEDICAL AND TECHNICAL EDUCATION

MEDICAL AND TECHNICAL EDUCATION
Medical education and technical education are two important constituents of higher education, which are monitored and controlled by the medical council of India (MCI) and the All india Council for Technical Education (AICTE).
The rising demand for higher education, and the governments inability to fulfil the requirements have created an opportunity for private players to enter the arena in big way. This has resulted in the mush rooming of professional institution. The kind of vertical growth with no sound base has provided an ideal opportunity to middlemen and touts when no concern for ethical values to intervene and influencee both MCI and AICTE. The CBI has raised doubts over the honesty and transparency of the system.
An autonomous body, MCI came in to existence through an act of parliament in 1956.The increased demand for private medical college made people with money power and the right political connection to enter the council giving scopee for manipulation.
The carriculam is aimed at producing a multi- competent physician ie family physican volunteering to work at the primary level with social responsibility.
There is an urgent need to introduce the mentor system for meanig ful teacher- student interaction. It is still possible to attract dedicated and talented teachers with offers of attractive salary housing, conference incentive and research fund.

According to chandigarh based lawyers, honour killings happen with regularity in Punjab,Haryana and western uttar pradesh and most of them are not reported for feat of ostracism from the local community. They happen not only with in the muslim community but also among sikhs and Hindus. Hariyana,Punjab and Uttar pradesh account for about 900 honour killings and another 100 to300 in the rest of the country.
Forced marriages and honour killings are often interwined. Marriage can be forced to save honour, and women can be murdered for rejecting a forced marriage and marrying a partner of their ownchoice who is not acceptaable for the family of the girl. In traditional societies, honour killings are basically justified as a sanction for dishonurable behaviour.
The forced marriages of honour killings’ the social dimensions and implications are the same. Forced and early young girls in relationships that deprive them of their basic human rights. Forced marriage constitutes a human rights violation in itself.
Several reasons lead to the high frequency of forced marriages. Traditions prescribe that it is the parents who are responsible for the marriage of their children. Parents are generally believed to have a better knowledge of what is goode for their children which is the reason why the pratice of arranged marriages is still prevalent throughout the country marriage is not considered to be an individual affair but a family affair

BJP SEEKS NIA PROBE

BJP SEEKS NIA PROBE

The Bharatiya Janata Party has sought an inquiry by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) into the assault on Prof T.J Joseph,Newman College,Thodupuzha.
The popular Front of India and  the NDF allegedly involved in the incident  should be banned. Congress leader Aryadan Mohammed said that Pakistan’s spy  agency, the Inter Service- Intelligence (ISI) is active in Kerala, and Malappuram district. Malappuram will become the worst- affected dustrict in the state. ISI was abetting terrorism in the state.Every one who gives any kind of help to the extremists should be brought to book. The recovery of pipe bombs and the torching of cinemas in the disrict indicated the emergence of terrorist  links. The  organisations such as the popular Front of India, the people’s Democratic party and the Jamaat e- Isami had become a problem for the state. These  forces should be oppsed at any cost. No social or political consideration should be given to these organisations.
Mr Kunhalikutty said that one found to have links with the suspected militant  out fit  popular Front of India(PFI)would have no place in muslim League. League would not have any contact with PFI.League’s mission was to strengthen communal harmony

PROTEST AGAINST ATTACK ON COLLEGE PROFESSOR

PROTEST AGAINST ATTACK ON
COLLEGE PROFESSOR

The Kerala Private College Teachers Association staged protests across the state on Tuesday 6th July,2010 against the attack on Mr T.J Joseph, Professor and Head of the Department of Malayalam at Newmen College, Thodupuzha, by anti social elements on Sunday4th July.
The Kerala State has been noted historically for the peaceful co-exixtence of different faiths and beliefs. This act of barbarism. It was a planned operation carried out with brutal intent adds to the shock. The Management of the College concerned had suspended the teacher for an in appropriate reference to the prophet that appeared in an examination question paper and apologised for the aberration. The law has been taking course and a criminal case against the teacher was being persued. The culprits need to be apprehended and prosecuted immediately.
There is a larger lesson that Freedom of expression has increasingly come under attack from religious fanatics in democratic and secular India and it is the duty of society and the political system to intervene more effectively to defend those who are targeted even if they express un popular views.
There is no second opinion that the action of T.J Joseph in setting a question paper offending the sentiments of muslims was wrong. The attack on him by activists of the popular front of India, chopping off his palm is highly condemnable. No religion or ideology sanctions such a barbaric act.
The brutal incident could take place in a state like Kerala, known for its centuries old religious amity, is indeed shocking. A heartening feature which cutting across political lines, condemned the act with out reserv ation. Unfortunately social activists and the intelligentsia have not reacted strongly to the barbaricc act. It is time peoples from all walks of life reacted such incidents strongly. The government should keep a check on foreign and domestic funds which are used for promoting fundamentalism.
The incident perpetrated by the fundamentalists is non Islamic and against the faith and the teachings of the prophet.
