Kerala has the lowest per capita milk availability. The state is heavily dependent on its neighbours for meeting its ever- increasing demand for milk. Kannadi Grama Panchayat in Palakkad district shows simple ways to bridge the demand –supply gap.
With a successful scheme christened’ Nature Fresh Milk, Kannadi Grama Panchayat in the Palakkad district has shown how local- level initiatives can make things a little better.
The panchayat has turned 50 persons into dairy enterpreneurs, rearing 100 high yielding cows and producing around 300 litres of milk every day.
The milk is sold to around 350 families in the panchayat and surrounding areas through specially set up 50 Nature Fresh milk vending out lets with in an hour of procurement. The milk is sold at Rs 24 a litre with farmers getting Rs 20 a litre as against the Rs 17 they get from the milk co-operative societies.
The scheme is being implemented by the local units of the kudumbasree mission using the backward region. Grant Fund that gives 50 percent subsidy to the farmer for cowshed and buying the cows. High demand for fresh milk from hostels and educational institutions in the town. The panchayat is planning to set up another 50 dairy units. Kannadi panchat is a model for other panchayats.
