REMBUTAN CULTIVATION

                 RAMBUTAN CULTIVATION
Farmers in many parts of Pathanamthitta in central Travancore have taken to cultivation of Rambuttan (Nephelium Lappaceum). It has high demand from traders in TamilNadu and Karnataka . The single- seed juicy fruit with curved spines on the rind in red or yellow co lour is indigenous to Malaya and Singapore regions. Rambutan was brought to kerala by people who had migrated to Malaya and Singapore.
The fruit trees grow in the river basins of pampa, manimala and the Achencoil. The Rambuttan fruit contains a seed surrounded by pearl white flesh with translucent, sub acid, sweet flavor, which is the edible part of it.
In view of good demand from the neighboring states the farmers took up cultivation of fruit as an income generating venture. The period from June to August is the harvest season and traders from Thenkasi and Tirunelveli in Tamil Nadu purchase the produce at prices ranging from Rs 5000 to Rs 10000 a tree.
The fruit is available in the local market at Rs 60 to 75 a kg during the season while in cities, it is sold at Rs 90 to Rs 150 kg. the branches of the trees are covered with nylon nets to protect the fruits from birds, especially bats. Maramon, Kozhencherry, Ayroor, Ranny, Konni and Mallappally are places that grow Rambuttan
The fruit is commonly eaten out of hand after tearing the rind open,or cutting it around the middle. The peeled fruits are also used to prepare dessert. They are canned in syrup on a limited scale.
The Rambutan farmers say to the government should provide assistance by initiating market intervention through Horicorp or the Agriculture Department and check exploitation by middlemen from the neighbouring states.

YASH PAL RECOMMENDED THE ESTABLISHMENT OF A NATIONAL COMMISSION FOR HIGHER EDUCATION AND RESEARCH

YASH PAL RECOMMENDED THE ESTABLISHMENT OF A NATIONAL COMMISSION FOR HIGHER EDUCATION AND RESEARCH
The yash pal Committee to advice on Renovation and Rejuvenation of Higher Education. The Committee has recommended the establishment of a National Commission of Higher Education and Research (NCHER) as an advisory body responsible for comprehensive and continues reforms in the higher education sector. This commission should be established as a central statutory body through a constitutional amendment and, subsume the existing regulatory bodies such as the University Grants Commission (UGC), the National Council of Teacher Education (NCTE) and the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE). All of higher educations can not be detached from general education. Professional education cannot be detached from general education.
It would be, there for imperative that all higher education, including engineering, medicine, agriculture and law be brought with the purview of a single, all- encompassing higher education authority. Professional bodies such as the AICTE, the NCTE, the medical council of India (MCI), the Bar Council of India (BCI) the council of Architecture (COA) and the pharmacy council of India (PCI) should be looking at whether the people who wish to practice in their respective fields are fit do so. They should conduct regular qualifying tests for professionals in their respective fields. Universities should be made responsible regarding the academic content of professional courses. The committee favored the idea of inviting from abroad a substantial number potentially grant academics and scientists to work with our students and teachers.

He said’ Australia is one of the safest countries’ The series of attacks on Indian students recently is the damage to Australia’s reputation in India and elsewhere.
At least five key departments of the Federal government, right from the office of the prime Minister are engaged in a damage control exercise, which includes amending the education services for overseas students (ESOS) Act, according to which the national Code of Practice for Registration Authorities and providers of Education and Training to overseas students has been drawn up. CENTRAL GOVERNMENT- BANS CPI (MAOIST)

CENTRAL GOVERNMENT
BANS CPI (MAOIST)
The Central government on Monday 22 nd June BANNED THE Communist party of India (Maoist) terming it a terrorist organization. The ban came in the back drop of violent incidents in Lalgarh and the ongoing operation by the police and the security forces to reclaim the area How ever, the centre acted swiftly, invoking section 41 of the unlawful activities (Prevention) Act. The CPI (Maoist) came in to existence following the merger of the communist party of India (Marxist-Leninist), the peoples war group (PWG) and the Maoist Communist Centre (MCC)
The ban was to avoid any ambiguity though all formations and front organizations of PWG, the MCC and CPI (MC) came under the purview of the ban.
In September 2004, the CPI (MC) and MCC announced their decision to merge and named the new organization CPI (Maoist). There were some elements in the two organizations continued to function independently.
The Home minister said Andhrapradesh, Madhypradesh and Chhattisgarh had declared the CPI(Maoist) as an unlawful Association and Bihar, Orissa,Jharkand and TamilNadu too had done so under the unlawful activities prevention Act.
The Home minister again said that West Bengal should declare the CPI (Maoist) an unlawful association. So far as the central government is concerned, the powers are vested in it under the unlawful activities (Prevention) Act 1967 as amended. The last amendment was made by the Act 35 of 2008 which came in to force on December 31,2008
The Centers decision to ban the CPI (Maoist), declaring it a terrorist organization is a step in the right direction. The Maoist is responsible for killing innocent people and police personnel. They disrupt elections. They resort to civil war-like action against elected government and lay siege to areas as they did in Lalgarh

DAIRY SECTOR AND MILK PRODUCTION

DAIRY SECTOR
AND
MILK PRODUCTION
Kerala depends on the neighbouring states to meet the domestic demand for milk. Milma the largest dairy operator in the state buys around 2 lakh liters of milk every day. Approximately one-fifth of its demand, from other states.
The dairy owners are struggling for survival, says the managing director of milgram, a private dairy in Ernakulam. Several dairy operators have left the field for more rewarding occupations.
Much of the sectors activity associated with agriculture, but the categorization of dairy as an industry has come in the way of its prospects. The industrial tariff for electricity consumed in dairy operations has hit the sector. Last year, Ernakulam dairy paid several lakhs of rupees towards additional power tariff. Cost of production isles in TamilNadu and Karnataka. Land and Labour which have a bearing on the cost of production are cheaper in other states.
A dairy based in Muvathupuzha was closed down recently after it became unviable. Another dairy at vazhakkulam in Ernakulam is in a bad shape. Many dairies in small and medium segments are facing crisis.
Milk production in kerala has been declining drastically says obi Reddy, scientist at the National Dairy Research Institute, Bangalore, who recently conducted other states have introduced steps to increase productivity, he points out

ATTACKS AGAINST INDIAN STUDENTS IN AUSTRALIA ARE CONTINUING

The attacks against Indian students in Australia are continuing and spreading to other parts of the country and Canada. Peoples minds are poisoned with hatred towards fellow beings on the basis of race, religion, language, culture etc.
Many of our citizens believe that foreign education is superior. But we have a good foreign institution. We should take a collective decision of not studying in foreign countries which make huge money of us.
The Australian authority has woken up to arrest the criminals. India too should take a firm stand in seeking assurance of student safety

Pearl Continental is a famous Hotel in Peshawar. It is the failure of Pakistan authority to prevent a truck carrying 500 kg of explosives from entering a highly guarded cantonment area
The attack on the Hotel in Peshawar by the Taliban has proved that it is well equipped, well- funded, and well- informed. Pakistan should first eliminate its inside support and get serious about uprooting terrorism from its soil. The frequent attack shows the failure of Pakistan’s internal security. Islamabad should take serious measures to curb the spread of Taliban. The first step is Pakistani authorities in to realizing that the sooner the terrorist training camps are closed on their soil

Ms MEIRA KUMAR ELECTED SPEAKER

Ms MEIRA KUMAR
ELECTED SPEAKER
A page in Indian parliament’s history was turned on Wednesday 3 rd june 2009, with unanimous election of Ms Meira Kumar as the first Woman speaker of the Lok sabha. Ms Meira Kumar is the first women speaker and the second Dalit, after Balayogi to occupy the chair. She has well experienced member of Lok sabha and as a Minister. She seems to have the desired qualities of amiabilit6y,patience and a commitment to fair play.
Ms Meira Kumar assured the Lok sabha members of her full protection and urged them to get down to the task of nation building together. She promised tobe” entirely impartial” and give opportunities to every member of parliament to have his or her say. She asked the political parties to rise above partisan considerations when decisions need to be taken on important national issues.
The speaker said she was a passionate votary of woman empowerment and that the election of the first woman president of the Republic of India two years ago and now the first woman speaker were not just symbolic gestures but indicated a “genuine intention to make women stronger. She hoped the 15 th Loksabha would not waste time but would address and debate issues and allow members to raise people’s concerns.
The election of Meira Kumar as the first woman speaker of the lok sabha shows India’s commitment to uphold the position and dignity of women. India has a long tradition of respecting women. Indian women have scaled the heights of glory in politics, literature, science ,social wort etc. Ms Sonia Gandhi, Ms Pratibha Patil, Ms Mamata Banerjee, Ms Jayalalitha, Ms Mayavati and Ms Meira Kumar in politics has proved the capability to decision making. We congratulate the UPA government and the opposition parties to elect the woman speaker.
Ms Meira kumar does represent a Dalit in real sense? She belongs to the creamiest of the creamy layers. As daughter of Babu Jagjivan Ram. She had a privileged childhood. She was lucky to study in excellent schools and colleges. She was a member of India’s elite Foreign service. She did not face any discrimination or deprivation which dalits face. Any way the election of Mskumar is being sought to be projected as a great achievement for women. Women no doubt, are deprived lot.But their condition cannot be changed if just a few of them occupy in a high political office. Illiteracy, lack of access to healthcare, poverty and social changes faced and endured by women need to addressed in the right perspective
