KERALA STATE SEEKS
Rs 200 CRORE- FOR GAMES FUND
The Kerala state government has submitted a Rs 200 corer proposed to the centre for creating the infrastructural facilities necessary for holding the national games in kerala in may 2010. Kerala sports minister Mr Vijayakumar said that the government hoped that the centre would provide assistance to the state to finish the work in time for the Games. The governments plan was to upgrade facilities and create new ones only where it was absolutely essential, to minimize cost. The government was working on both long and short term projects, with the latter aimed at conduct of the national Games.
These would include completion of the international swimming pool complex at pirappancode in Thiruvananthapuram, and contracting of facilities to accommodate around 8000 athletes and officials expected to participate.
The state government had earmarked Rs 90 corer in the 2009-10 budget, but the state still expected maximum support from the centre. Steps had also been taken to secure the services of Olympian Suresh Babu to train the state athletes
