CENTRAL GOVERNMENT- BANS CPI (MAOIST)

CENTRAL GOVERNMENT
BANS CPI (MAOIST)
The Central government on Monday 22 nd June BANNED THE Communist party of India (Maoist) terming it a terrorist organization. The ban came in the back drop of violent incidents in Lalgarh and the ongoing operation by the police and the security forces to reclaim the area How ever, the centre acted swiftly, invoking section 41 of the unlawful activities (Prevention) Act. The CPI (Maoist) came in to existence following the merger of the communist party of India (Marxist-Leninist), the peoples war group (PWG) and the Maoist Communist Centre (MCC)
The ban was to avoid any ambiguity though all formations and front organizations of PWG, the MCC and CPI (MC) came under the purview of the ban.
In September 2004, the CPI (MC) and MCC announced their decision to merge and named the new organization CPI (Maoist). There were some elements in the two organizations continued to function independently.
The Home minister said Andhrapradesh, Madhypradesh and Chhattisgarh had declared the CPI(Maoist) as an unlawful Association and Bihar, Orissa,Jharkand and TamilNadu too had done so under the unlawful activities prevention Act.
The Home minister again said that West Bengal should declare the CPI (Maoist) an unlawful association. So far as the central government is concerned, the powers are vested in it under the unlawful activities (Prevention) Act 1967 as amended. The last amendment was made by the Act 35 of 2008 which came in to force on December 31,2008
The Centers decision to ban the CPI (Maoist), declaring it a terrorist organization is a step in the right direction. The Maoist is responsible for killing innocent people and police personnel. They disrupt elections. They resort to civil war-like action against elected government and lay siege to areas as they did in Lalgarh
