MUZIRIS PROJECT
The initial phase of the muziris Hertiage Project (MHP) heritage preservation-cum tourism project in central kerala, will ready by December 2009.
The project aims at preserving the historical buildings and cultural and traditional heritage at the Muziris site, covering seven panchayats ( Chennamangalam, chittathukara, Vadakkekara, pallippuram, Azhicode, methala and Mathilekam ) and two municipalities (North Paravur and Kodugalloor) in Ernakulam and Thrissur districts. The Rs 100 corer project will have a holistic approach towards sustainable development. The project will create job opportunities in various sections and boost local economy. Special focus will be given to revive traditional industries and artisans.
Infrastructure will be developed with available space and facilities. Major hotels or huge structures will not be part of it. Local people can earn good income by providing accommodation facilities such as home stays.
The new Museums will include the kerala History Museum at Cheramanparambu, the military museum at pallipuram and museum of Freedom struggle it Abdul Rahman Sahib’s house. A documentation centre is also being planned.
Muziris was an active port in the first century B.C with trade links with major ports in Asia, Europe and Africa. The Merchants of Muziris traded with Arabs, Portuguese, Dutch, Chinese, British, and many other travelers.
