Ms MEIRA KUMAR ELECTED SPEAKER

Ms MEIRA KUMAR
ELECTED SPEAKER
A page in Indian parliament’s history was turned on Wednesday 3 rd june 2009, with unanimous election of Ms Meira Kumar as the first Woman speaker of the Lok sabha. Ms Meira Kumar is the first women speaker and the second Dalit, after Balayogi to occupy the chair. She has well experienced member of Lok sabha and as a Minister. She seems to have the desired qualities of amiabilit6y,patience and a commitment to fair play.
Ms Meira Kumar assured the Lok sabha members of her full protection and urged them to get down to the task of nation building together. She promised tobe” entirely impartial” and give opportunities to every member of parliament to have his or her say. She asked the political parties to rise above partisan considerations when decisions need to be taken on important national issues.
The speaker said she was a passionate votary of woman empowerment and that the election of the first woman president of the Republic of India two years ago and now the first woman speaker were not just symbolic gestures but indicated a “genuine intention to make women stronger. She hoped the 15 th Loksabha would not waste time but would address and debate issues and allow members to raise people’s concerns.
The election of Meira Kumar as the first woman speaker of the lok sabha shows India’s commitment to uphold the position and dignity of women. India has a long tradition of respecting women. Indian women have scaled the heights of glory in politics, literature, science ,social wort etc. Ms Sonia Gandhi, Ms Pratibha Patil, Ms Mamata Banerjee, Ms Jayalalitha, Ms Mayavati and Ms Meira Kumar in politics has proved the capability to decision making. We congratulate the UPA government and the opposition parties to elect the woman speaker.
Ms Meira kumar does represent a Dalit in real sense? She belongs to the creamiest of the creamy layers. As daughter of Babu Jagjivan Ram. She had a privileged childhood. She was lucky to study in excellent schools and colleges. She was a member of India’s elite Foreign service. She did not face any discrimination or deprivation which dalits face. Any way the election of Mskumar is being sought to be projected as a great achievement for women. Women no doubt, are deprived lot.But their condition cannot be changed if just a few of them occupy in a high political office. Illiteracy, lack of access to healthcare, poverty and social changes faced and endured by women need to addressed in the right perspective
