INDIA CONSIDERING RS 500 CRORE RELIEF FOR SRI LANKAN TAMILS

The announcement about the humanitarian relief came a few hours after Tamil Nadu chief minister met prime minister Man mohan singh. “ a package of almost Rs 500 cror5e which will be required for rehabilitation is uner preparation. The details would be finalised by time India send its special envoys to Sri Lanka.
Earlier National security advisor m.K Narayanan and foreign secretary Shiv Shankar Menon had traveled to Colombo as special envoys and had discussed the situation. India believes their visit led to Sri Lanka stopping the use of heavy arms including artillery barrages and fighter bombing runs against Ltte fighters to avoid death of civilians who were being used as human shields by the militants.
The envoys are likely to re-iterate India’s request to Sri Lanka to urgently initiate the process of political reconciliation whose absence led to 26 year old civil war. India is already implementing a Rs 100 crore aid package announced by Dr Manmohan singh. In addition the Tamil Nadu government has also offered assistance worth Rs 25 crore. LTTE SUPREMO PRABAKARAN DEAD

LTTE SUPREMO PRABAKARAN DEAD
Sri Lankan president Mahinda Rajapaksa called up Indian External Affairs minister Pranab Mukherjee to confirm that the armed resistance by the LTTE had ended and its leader Prabakaran was dead. The bodies of LTTE leaders positively identified by the military included that of Charles Anthony, elder son of Prabakaran, the Tiger intelligence wing chief PottuAmman, the political wing leader B. Nadesn etc.. The Sri Lankan armed forces have won a comprehensive victory over the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam in a military campaign that began in the eastern province in August 2006.
The killing of Velupillai prabakaran, and his son and other top LTTE leaders by Sri Lankan armed forces has brought to an end a horrific chapter in the history of sri lanka. The three decades old civil war has ended in Sri- Lanka. But the ethnic issue is still alive. The immediate task before the president Mahinda Rajapaksa is the rehabilitation of Tamils and devolution of power to them with in the frame work of a united Sri Lanka. The Sri Lankan government now faces a great responsibility- that providing food, shelter and livelihood to the citizens rudely uprooted from their home land
The method adopted by the LTTE might have been un -acceptable. But its cause was genuine. The reason why the struggle started- atrocities perpctrated on the Tamils by the Sinhala majority and the reluctance on the part of successive government to give them equal rights is still relevant. Prabakaran had no respect for human lives and values. If the welfare of the Sri Lankan Tamils was his prime concern, he would have accepted the Indo- Sri Lanka agreement of 1987 and saved lakhs of Tamils from misery. He had many opportunities to negotiate a peaceful settlement to the ethnic issue. But he refused to settle for any thing. He was a leader who did not know when to fight and when t6o negotiate. He built he LTTE and destroyed it.
The Sri Lankan government should engage in a conciliation exercise and adopt measures to eliminate discrimination against the Tamils. The government must ensure equal right & equal position to the Sri Lankan Tamils and Sinhalese

SRI LANKAN TAMILS SHOULD GET EQUAL RIGHT AS OF EQUAL CITIZENS

SRI LANKAN TAMILS SHOULD GET EQUAL RIGHT AS OF EQUAL CITIZENS
The Sri Lankan government’s decision to stop combat operations against the LTTE comes as a relief to all peace- loving people even though it falls short of a complete ceasefire. India along with of the International Community should rush food and medical aid to the grief- stricken people coming out of the no- fire zone. The Sri Lankan government should give equal rights for their Sri Lankan Tamils. The Tamils should get a better deal and equal rights as equal citizens. To day they are refugees in their own land. Sri Lankan government should provide equal legal safeguards to Tamils and Sinhalese.
Sri Lankan president Mahinda Rajapaksa has made it clear that his governments key objective is getting the civilians out from the clutches of the LTTE. He again said that the choice before the LTTE was either surrender or face the Army.

ARANMULA PALLIYODAMA-- COMMUNAL HARMONY

ARANMUL PALLIYODAMS
COMMUNAL HARMONY
Palliyodams ( snakeboats stand for communal Harmony in central Travancore. When a village builds one of these boats, all its people, followers of various faiths, come together. This is in evidence at Ayroor now.
Palloyodam means boat of Lord parthasathy, presiding deity of the centuries- old Sree Parthhasarathy Temple at Aranmula. Palliyoda Karayogams, representing the villages along the pampa, are the custodians of these boats that cut through the riveer during the Onamregatta, known as Uthrittathi Vallamkali.Three Karayogams launched their boats in to the pampa a year ago. The Ayroor Nair Service society Palliyoda Karayogam is the latest to build a boat . It will sell its workhorse, the oldest snakeboat in the region at 45 years. Boat- building is fast under way under the auspices of the Ayroor Palliyoda Nirmana Samithi.
Aranmula palliyodams are unique in their shape and structure. The boats are equal in length at the front, centre and rear. Only the central portion touches the water. The decorated rear head, where four experienced men stand and steer the boat with long, thick oars, remains 10 feet above the water level, while the pointed front will be six feet above.

ARCHITECT OF ALAPPUZHA

ARCHITECT OF ALAPPUZHA
Raja kesavadas
More than two centuries after Raja Kesavadas passed away, the Alappuzha town, which owes its beautiful canals and a major share of its history to him, is yet to honour his contributions.
Apart from the occasional meetings discussing the role that Diwan Raja Kesavadas ( 1745-1799) played to shape. Alappuzha in to what it is now, little has been done to honour the person, called the architect of what is known the world over as the Venice of the East
Raja Kesavads, who changed the Alappuzha port into the busiest ones of that period and the region as the commercial capital of the erstwhile state of Travancore, developed the parallel canals here to ensure that cargo from the port had a smooth pathway to inland regions.
He also invited businessmen from the then Bombay, Rajasthan and Gujarat among other places to invest here. It is not as if there were no any plans for a memorial. A Project report, envisaging a statue of Raja Kesavadas near the Stone Bridge junction here, has been gathering dust for several years now.
According to N. Aravindakshan, chairman of the Raja Kesavadas memorial Committee that was formed around 12 years ago, the initial idea was to erect a statue at kalarcode junction, on the sides of the national High way-47. But possibilities of highway expansion thwarted the plan.
