1.8 LAKH SRI LANKAN TAMILS HAVE CROSSED OVER IN TO THE GOVERNMENT TERRITORY
1.8 lakh Sri Lankan Tamil civilians crossed over in to the government territory since April 24. The Sri Lankan government is faced with gigantic task of providing them immediate shelter and basic facilities. Sri Lanka would require help from the international community to address the humanitarian crisis. Sri Lankan military had to ensure that there was no repeat of incidents such as suicide bombing of infiltration by Tigers in the guise of civilians. The military were continuing with their operations to rescue an e4stimated 15000 to 20,ooo held hostage by the LTTE.
The Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) sheltered among an estimated 20,000 civilians in less than 8 sq k.m inside the government demarcated no fire zone, on Sunday 26 th April 2009 declared a unilateral ceasefire of offensive military operations. The government of Sri Lanka termed the LTTE’s announcement is a joke’ and cheap publicity stunt. LTTE must surrender with their weapons and release the civilians they were using as human shield.
