KOTAGIRI-ONE OF THE BEST CLIMATE IN THE WORLD

കൊത്തഗിരി എന്ന  നാടൻ ‘സ്വിറ്റ്സർലൻഡ്‌’

Kotagiri is the oldest and the third largest hill stations in the Nilgiris. Looming over and above all the surrounding hills in the North-eastern escarpments, its climate is claimed to be one of the best in the World.Kotagiri literally means the lines of the house of the Kotas. Kotagiri is quietly tucked away in the Nilgiris and used to be the summer resort of the British. Till date the beauty of hill resort of Kotagiri attracts tourists and the sun scorched souls from far and wide. Kotagiri is situated in an 'open-terrace' massif. At an elevation of 1985 m. the town has developed around numerous knolls and valleys. The Kotagiri weather is more bracing than that of Coonoor and balmier than that of Ooty. The beautiful Kotagiri is a hill station located in the lap of the Nilgiri hills. Snuggled at the towering height of 1985 m above sea level, it is a pleasant mountain getaway. The name Kotagiri translates to 'mountains of the Kotas'. The Nilgiri hills have been the traditional home of the Kota tribe.

ഊട്ടിപോലെ പ്രശസ്തമല്ലെന്നേയുള്ളു, ഊട്ടി പോലെയോ അതിനേക്കാളോ തന്നെ സുന്ദരമാണ് കോത്തഗിരിയും. ഊട്ടിയില് നല്ല തിരക്കെന്ന് തോന്നിയാല് സംശയിക്കേണ്ട കോത്തഗിരിക്ക് വണ്ടി തിരിക്കാം. കാരണം ഇന്ത്യയിലെ സ്വിറ്റ്‌സര്ല ന്ഡ്ക എന്ന വിളിപ്പേര് വീണ സ്ഥലമാണ് കോത്തഗിരി. ഈ വിളിപ്പേര് വെറുതെയൊന്നുമല്ല കോത്തഗിരിക്ക് വന്നത്.സ്വിറ്റ്‌സര്ല ന്ഡിെന് തുല്യമായ മനോഹരമായ കാലാവസ്ഥയാണ് കോത്തഗിരിയിലേതും. തമിഴ്‌നാട് മുഖ്യമന്ത്രി ജയലളിതയുടെ ഒഴിവുകാല വസതി ഇവിടെയാണ്.

ഊട്ടിയില് നിന്നും 28 കിലോമീറ്റര് ദൂരമുണ്ട് കോത്തഗിരിയിലേക്ക്. മസിനഗുഡിയില് നിന്നും ഗൂഡല്ലൂരില് നിന്നും വരുന്നവര്ക്ക്  ഊട്ടിയിലെത്താതെ തന്നെ കോത്തഗിരിയിലേക്ക് പോകാം. കൂനൂരില് നിന്നാണെങ്കില് 23 കിലോമീറ്റര് ദൂരം. മഞ്ഞില് പുതച്ചു കിടക്കുന്ന കോത്തഗിരി കാണുമ്പോള് ഒരുവേള ഊട്ടിയിലേക്കാള് മനോഹരമെന്നും തോന്നിപ്പോകാം. അത്രമേല് മനോഹരമായ കുന്നിന് നിരകളും വ്യൂപോയിന്റുകളുമാണ് കോത്തഗിരിയിലേത്. പിന്നെ നോക്കെത്താ ദൂരങ്ങളോളം തേയില തോട്ടങ്ങളും.

സമുദ്രനിരപ്പില് നിന്ന് 1783 അടി ഉയരത്തിലാണ് കോത്തഗിരി. കോത്ത എന്ന ആദിവാസികളുടെ സ്ഥലമായതിനാല് കോത്തഗിരി എന്ന വിളിപ്പേര് വീണു. കോത്തഗിരിയിലെ കോടനാടിന് ഈ പേര് വീഴാന് തന്നെ കാരണം കോടമഞ്ഞിന്റെ നാടായതിനാലാണ്. കോടനാട് വ്യൂപോയിന്റ് കഴിഞ്ഞാല് പിന്നെ കാതറിന് വെള്ളച്ചാട്ടവും രംഗസ്വാമീ പീക്കുമാണ് കോത്തഗിരിയിലെ സഞ്ചാര കേന്ദ്രങ്ങള്. കാഴ്ചയെ ത്രസിപ്പിക്കുന്ന പ്രകൃതിയുടെ വിസ്മയം തന്നെയാണ് കോത്തഗിരിയിലെ പ്രധാന കാഴ്ചയായ കാതറിന് വെള്ളച്ചാട്ടം. ഊട്ടിയിലേത് പോലെ ഹോട്ടലുകള് കോത്തഗിരിയില് ഉണ്ടാവില്ല എന്നാല് റിസോട്ടുകള് നിരവധിയുണ്ട് കോത്തഗിരിയില്. ഊട്ടിയേക്കാള് എന്തുകൊണ്ടും ബജറ്റ് കുറവായിരിക്കും കോത്തഗിരിയില് എന്നതും ഒരു പ്രത്യേകത തന്നെയാണ്.
