NOBEL PRIZE FOR ECONOMICS

Jean Tirole has been named as 2014's winner of the Economics Nobel prize, "for his analysis of market power and regulation".The French professor received the award for his contributions on how to regulate large companies.This year's prize is about "taming powerful firms", Staffan Normark, permanent secretary of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences said.Mr Tirole's began his research in the field of regulation and oligopoly in the 1980s, and has made advances in understanding the problems that regulators often face.

Mr Tirole has advanced smarter approaches to regulating large firms. Before his work, policymakers often favoured blunt tools, such as price caps, while Mr Tirole has advocated more sector specific and tailored approaches.

Mr Tirole is scientific director of industrial economics at Toulouse University, and earned his PhD at MIT. He contributed to a 2013 report that called to "complete the euro" with deeper European integration.The most famous paper of this year's winner - Intrinsic and Extrinsic Motivation - challenges a central tenet of economics, that individuals always respond to incentives.The economics prize’s full title is "The Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel", and it has now been awarded 46 times.
