Saint Joseph’s Higher Secondary School, Peruvamthanam, in
Idukki has been selected as the best school in the State for implementing the
energy conservation awareness improvement programme ‘Nalekkithiri oorjam’
(energy for the future) launched by the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) The
programme targets schools in coordination with the Education Department at the
Energy Management Centre.Saint Joseph’s Higher Secondary School gets a cash
prize of Rs.1,00,000 for its performance. Best schools at the district level
will get cash prizes of Rs.25,000. The best three students in each school will
be given Rs.500, Rs.300 and Rs.200.The awards will be distributed to the
winning schools and the individual students at a function to be organised by
the KSEB on the occasion of the Energy Conservation Day on December 14.
About 1.23 lakh students from 2,380
schools, coming under the Education Department, had registered under the
programme, the period of which was from August 1, 2011 to May 31, 2012. An
amount of Rs.70 lakh was sanctioned for the programme. A special software
package was also developed to compute the energy consumption and savings done
by the registered students.Students from Class V to Class X could register for
the programme, which was carried forward under the supervision of a
coordinator. Each student was given a diary to note down the measures they took
to conserve electricity and bring down wasteful consumption.
