Kitchen and terrace gardens are adding a new dimension to the idea of going green in the emerging everywhere in Kerala acreage on concrete roofs is on the rise year by year.Efforts by individuals, and institutions such as the Vegetable and Fruit Promotion Council Keralam (VFPCK), have inspired a large number of  residents to take up cultivating their courtyards and terraces to supplement the vegetables and fruits purchased from the market.As many as 400 kitchen and terrace gardens have already been set up in the Ernakulam city and its surrounding areas this year. And 6,000 city families have taken up cultivating at least a portion of their vegetable requirement. Response from the people is more than positive, the officials of VFPCK said.Buoyed by the results, the council has started setting up vegetable gardens on terraces and in the backyards of urban homes. For a payment of Rs 3,500 a pack of 25 potted samplings will be set up by VFPCK in Kakkanad. If the customer is willing to foot the transport bill, the gardens can be set up anywhere.The council has also been offering mushroom spawns and training to those willing to take up mushroom cultivation.This enthusiasm by the public is a sign that people are becoming more conscious about what they eat and are now willing to put in some time to produce vegetables or fruits even in limited quantities, the officials said.

The State Horticulture Mission, in association with the District Agri-Horticulture Society, is planning to market organic vegetables produced under its Peri-urban Terrace Vegetable Farming project in the district towards the end of this year.The marketing of excess vegetables produced under the project is likely to be taken up by October soon after a harvesting festival during Onam, covering the first batch of 3,500 to 4,000 households which would have been covered under the project by then.During the post-harvest period, focus will be on redistributing seedlings, organic manure and fertilizers to these households to ensure the continuity of the project. “Excess vegetables in these households will be collected for marketing during such visits for replenishing raw materials,” D. Radhakrishnan, secretary, District Agri-Horticulture Society, told The Hindu . The terrace farming project was initially introduced in Thiruvananthapuram last year before launching it here in May this year with the funding of the State Horticulture Mission. It is being implemented by the District Agri-Horticulture Society and the district administration with the support of residents’ associations.

 Precision farming or precision agriculture is about doing the right thing, in the right place, in the right way, at the right time. Managing crop production inputs such as water, seed, fertilizer etc to increase yield, quality, profit, reduce waste and becomes eco-friendly. The intent of precision farming is to match agricultural inputs and practices as per crop and agro-climatic conditions to improve the accuracy of their applications. St. Gregorios College Alumni Association conducted One Day Silpa Sala on “ Terrace Agriculture and Prcisition Farming on 7^th July,2012 at Kotttarakara Mary Land Tuition Center. The second session began at 11.30 am. Prof. John Kurakar, President, Kerala Kavya Kala Sahithy, Mr. Krishnayyer, President Federation of Residents, Mr. Kurikesu was addressed the seminar session. Mr. Benny Kottapuram expressed vote of thanks.

        കൊട്ടാരക്കര: ജൈവ പച്ചക്കറിക്കൃഷി വ്യാപിപ്പിക്കുന്നതിന് സന്നദ്ധസംഘടനകള്‍ മുന്നിട്ടിറങ്ങണമെന്ന് കൊടിക്കുന്നില്‍ സുരേഷ് എം.പി. അഭിപ്രായപ്പെട്ടു.സെന്റ് ഗ്രിഗോറിയോസ് കോളേജ് അലുമ്‌നി അസോസിയേഷന്റെയും ഹോള്‍ട്ടികള്‍ച്ചറല്‍ ആന്‍ഡ് പ്രമോഷന്‍ കൗണ്‍സിലിന്റെയും നേതൃത്വത്തില്‍ നടന്ന ഏകദിന പരിശീലന ശില്പശാല ഉദ്ഘാടനം ചെയ്യുകയായിരുന്നു അദ്ദേഹം. ജൈവകൃഷി പ്രകൃതിക്കിണങ്ങിയതും ചെലവു കുറഞ്ഞതുമാണ്. ഇതിനായി കൃഷിവകുപ്പിന്റെ വിവിധ പദ്ധതികള്‍ പൂര്‍ണ്ണമായി ഉപയോഗപ്പെടുത്തണമെന്നും എം.പി. പറഞ്ഞു.
