SCHOOL HEALTH SCHEME
The School Health programme a major health initiative launched by the National Rural Health Mission (NRHM) and the Health Department in 2008 and which is being implemented in select schools in the state, will be scaled up to cover all schools across the state ina phased manner. In the Thiruvananthapuram district, 173 government and aided schools will be covered under the programe this year (2011), including the 90 schools where the programme is successfully on now.
The School Health programme, launched in October 2008 as a comprehensive programme to monitor the health of Children and adolescents and inculcate healthy lifestyle habits, is being implemented in only about 1.156(10 percent) schools.
In the current financial year (2011-12) the scheme will be extended to another 25 percent schools in the state. The services of more Junior public Nrse(JPHN) in the Health Department would be utilized to extend the school Health programme to all Schools. they will be given training in the programme by the NRHM, which will also supply the necessary equipment as well as the logistic and infra structured support to conduct health education and awareness classes among school children implementing the programme by the NRHM, which will also supply the necessary equipment as well as the logistic and infrastructural support to conduct health education and awareness classes among school children.
It was the tremendous response to the first ever schools health clinic in the state, which was started at cotton Hill HSS in the Thiruvananapuram city in December 2007. The clinic, run with a full time team of One doctor,nurse and a Councillor, was so popular that it pointed to the general health. All medicines are supplied free of cost to schools through the local primary health centers.
Promotion among children, education on preventive health and the importance of environmental hygiene in maintain public health are also an important part of the school Health Programme. The School Health programme is not just about taking care of the health of children but about making health an important part of their syllabus. So that the awareness about a healthy life style and the importance of physical activity is inculcated in them early
