CAPSULE FOR ENDOSCOPY

With Technology Advancement in Medical Science, now Endoscopy is possible just with the help of a Capsule. Also, there is double Balloon Endoscopy that further helps to cure. Ever imagined that a capsule can help you see the inside of your body? Yes, now as the technology in medicine is growing at a super fast pace some hospitals are adopting the new methods of doing endoscopy. This is called capsule endoscopy and the double balloon endoscopy.
Unlike the conventional process of endoscopy, in capsule endoscopy the patient is made to swallow a capsule and a recorder i fitted on the side of the waist.Senior consultant gastroenterologist Dr KNK Shetty from Manipal Hospital said, Traditionally, we used to view the stomach, intestines and pancreas with conventional process wherein a one meter tube was inserted through the mouth of the patient. With the help of that tube we used to see the stomach and pancreas but it was difficult to move the tube beyond duodenum to view small intestine. Therefore,with increasing technologies we can view the small intestine."
Dr Srinivasan of Fortis Hospital said about the new technology, with the help of capsule endoscopy we can see the small intestine also. there is a small cordless camera on one side of the capsule and on the other side is the battery. The Capsule easily reaches the small intestine and we can examine the problem. Pictures are recorded on the recorder tied on the patient's waist. After recording is complete we analyses the pictures and see the areas of interest. The recording is done for eight hours. The capsule comes out after 24 to 48 hours through a natural process."
The patient undergoing capsule endoscopy is kept on fasting for eight hours prior to taking the capsule and four hours after swallowing the capsule. In this process the capsule moves in all the directions. After capsuleendoscopy comes double balloon endoscopy. In capsule endoscopy doctor could only identify the problems inside the body of the patient but with the help of double balloon biopsies can be done, in case there is a colon it can be removed and so on. Basically double balloon helps in treting problems. It is two meter tube so it can go in small intestine. There are two balloons,one is in the endoscope and the other is in the tube. These balloons are inflated one by one so that the endoscope advance and also to make grip in small intestine as the path of the same is a little tricky.
Dr Shetty added," Problems which were difficult to diagnosis with conventional process of endoscopy is now possible with capsule endoscopy is now possible with capsule endoscopy. With the help of capsule endoscopy we can get multiple pictures. The camera captures two images per second, so in eight hours we get 56,000 pictures. We prefer doing capsule endoscopy first and then if need be we do double balloon. Capsule is done primarily to test sources of bleeding or crohn's disease. Double balloon is then done to control bleeding. Many people do not go for these techniques as they are a little expensive. Capsule endoscopy costs around Rs 30,000 and double balloon endoscopy costs Rs 15,000" All this shows that how the technology is zooming and making human life easier than ever.
