PLASTIC WASTE CAN YIELD DIESEL

Thiruvananthapuram -based institution "Bio-tech'  which is engaged   in bio- waste management and non conventional energy generation programmes, has acquired an innovative technology for generating diesel from plastic waste.
The technology  was developed in Austria is being promoted in India by the TVS Group. Bio-tech recently signed an agreement to associate with Haritha NTI division of TVS Group, which has already set up a factory using the technology to treat plastic waste at Mahabalipuram in Chennai.
The polymer energy technology will beable to treat all kinds of plastic wate.It will be a boon to local bodies across the state who find it hard to manage mounting plastic waste. Mr Saji Das is the director of  Bio tech.
The common method of using shredder in plastic waste management was cumbersome as the shredded plastic would have to be converted to other products. Between 400 and 600 liters of diesel could be generated from one tonne of plastic waste. The director said that Bio tech would provide the technology and expertise to set up and operate plants for local bodies or other agencies
The investment, however was om the higher side. Setting up a plant with the capacity to treat six  tonnes of plastic waste would cost between Rs 8 crore and   10 crore. But the entire envestment can be recovered in three to five years from the diesel generated. To operate the plant round the clock, just three to five  persons would have to be employed.Besides, considering the cost,Bio tech intends to set up plants with a scaled - down capacity of two to three tonnes on demand. The director said that " we are planning to organise a campaign to create awareness about the technology among local bodies in the state. Bio tech also wiling to do the demonstration and train interested parties.
