The Chief Minister inaugurated the Rs293 crore Japan International co operation Agency (JICA) aided Meenad drinking water scheme on 24th February,2011. The water scheme would benefit 5 lakh persons over 319 square kilometer, under the Paravur Muncipal limits and 13 other panchayats.. Water will be supplied to the beneficiaries at the rate of 100 liters per person. Work on the scheme began in September,2007.
It comprises a purification plant with capacity of purify 73 lakh liters of water per day. 80 km transmission pipeline and 14 over head tanks.
Out of the 920 km distribution pipeline required 720 km had been laid. The Kallada river is the water source. A computerised central control room will monitor the functioning of the scheme. The purification plant is at Panam kuttimala,near Punalur
