FISH FESTIVAL
The beauty and diversity of aquatic life will be on show at a five-day Fish Festival beginning on the Putharikandam Maidan, Thiruvananthapuram on Thursday 24th February,2011.
The event, organised by the Department of Fisheries and the National Fisheries Development Board, will also focus the development in the fisheries sector. It will high light the ornamental fish industry and aquaculture initiatives along with government-sponsored programmes like the Matsya Keralam people's campaign in fish culture, Theera Mythri alternative lively hood programme for fishermen families and the Kadal Suraksha scheme to ensure the safety of fishermen at sea.
As many as 200 stalls have been put up to exhibit marine and fresh water ornamental fish and their colourful habitat in aquariums of government institutions and private aquarists.
Live demonstrations on aquaculture stalls selling fresh fish, sea food and fish products, an open forum for fish farmers and cultural events are other attractions.. There will also be competitions for aquarium and thematic exhibition stalls.
The festival would bring government departments and agencies, educational institutions, aquarists, fish farmers, breeders, hobbyists, exporters, representatives of fish worker organisations and companies specializing in fisheries on a common plat form. Chief Minister is scheduled to inaugurate the festival on Thursday evening
