WORLD DIABETES DAY 14TH NOVEMBER,2010
In the recent years, diabetes has emerged as a dreadful disease and is reportedly growing at an alarming pace. It is estimated that 285 million people are suffering from diabetes and one person is falling a victim to diabetes in every 10 seconds across the world. The scenario in India is also changing from bad to worse and reportedly one out of every fourteen Indian is already a diabetic.
People with diabetes are prone to foot problems as diabetes causes damage to blood vessels and nerves. This,in turn results in a decreased ability to sense trauma or pressure on the foot and foot injury may un noticed until severe infection develops. Small infections can rapidly progress to death of the skin and other tissues, which may require amputation of the affected limb to save the patients life. Foot problems can be prevented in part with improved blood sugar control and part with custom made medically proven preventive Diabetic foot wear.
Diabetics are at ahigh risk for developing foot problems include gthose with diabetes for more than 10 years, thise with poor glucose control,those with eye,kidney and heart complication.
All diabetics should get regular foot examined at least twice a year by their health care provider to diagnose if they have nerve damage. In Kerala there is one Amputation( of feet) per day due to Diabetics.There are various kinds of Healing and preventive footwear available for Diabetic patients. These foot wear help in proper healing of ulcer point and reduction of pressure points.
The high incidence of diabetes in the country especially among children, the centre will soon launch a diabetes screening scheme for school children. It also proposes screening of all individuals for the disease in the next five years.
The scheme has been introduced in Delhi,Kolkata,Mumbai,Chennai,Hydrabad and Bangalore.The Centre will provide the test kit, including the galvanometers,and the states will chip in with logistics.
Initially,the scheme targeted people aged 30 and above,but now it covers pregnant women too. The government had identified 100 districts and slum areas of 30 cities with more than 10 lakh populations, where approximately 17-18 crore people would be screened through 20,000 sub centers. The scheme would be implemented in the remaining period of the 11th plan,and in 12th plan,the other parts of the country would be covered.
The screened people would be given cards,which would be given cards,which would have the results of tests,and the details including their socio-economic details. Free insulin doses would be given to poor patients
Hundreds of people including students,leaders and health worker took part in a ‘walk to Health’ programme held in connection with the world Diabetes Day celebration on 14th November at Kottarakara.
Prof. John Kurakar, president, Kerala Kavya Kala Sahithy inaugurated the programme. He said the walk was part of the global Diabetes walk, and it would be much use in making people, especially youth,aware of the importance of the morning and evening walk.
