ENDOSULFAN AND HEALTH PROBLEMS

ENDOSULFAN AND HEALTH PROBLEMS
Endosulfan was a pesticide that belonged to the organochloride family of chemicals. It was considered in other countries as one of the most dangerous pesticides. Many countries, including those in the European Union, had banned on the basis of research evidence pointing to its very dangerous effects on human beings and the environment. Studies had shown that it could cause serious health problems, including genetic disabilities, in human beings.
Kasaragod district had seen widespread maladies among people living in areas where this pesticide was used unscientifically. There was no basis in thee union governments stand the maladies detected among the people of Kasaragod district could not be traced to Endosulfan used as a pesticide in the cashew plantation.
Such a contention was based on technicalities, but circumstantial evidence and actual experience unambiguously pointed to the fact that only use of Emdosulfan was the reason for the health problems detected among the people living in the areas where it was being used as a pesticide. Several deaths too had occurred on account of the maladies caused by this pesticide in these areas.
The union government should ban this pesticide until it could be proved beyond all doubts through further studies that the chemical was safe.
