(A GEAT LIFE 1914-2010)

Jyoti Basu, veteran Marxist leader and one of the tallest figures in the country's political life, died of septicemia due to pneumonia that led to multi organ failure, on Sunday 17th January 2010. He was 95 and is survived by his son and three grand children.
Mr Basu was India's Prominent Communist leader, and one of post- independence India's greatest and most respected mass political leaders. He was the last of nine founding polit Bureau members and India's longest serving chief minister.
Br Basu was a man of immense charisma and extra ordinary personal discipline. He was the chief architect of the left Front in west Bengal. President Pratibha Patil led the country in paying rich tributes to the former west Bengal Chief Minister Jyoti Basu, as leaders across the political spectrum condoled his death while recalling the contribution of the nonagenarian Marxist leader.
President said Mr Basu earned the unique distinction of being the longest serving chief minister of any state from the late seventies to 2000, and displayed his abilities as a leader of the people, an able administrator and an eminent statesman. Prime Minister Manmohan singh said it was the end of an era in the annals of Indian politics. The former Prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee said Mr Basu was a dedicated political worker, an able administrator who became chief minister by dint of work and took visionary steps.
Leaders across the political spectrum have condoled the death of former west Bengal chief Minister Jyoti Basu. They described him a leader of great personal qualities who had made unforgettable contributions to the growth of the communist movement in the country.
Jyoti Basu was man of immense political stature, his charisma was undisputed. He was respected and listened to across the polit6ical and ideological spectrum on key policy matters, national and international. Mr Basu's record as independent India's longest-serving chief minister ( June 1977- November 2000) who led the communist party of India (MARXIST) AND THE Left Front to the first five of its seven successive Assembly election triumphs.
Jyoti Basu will be remembered forever for his administrative qualities. He successfully led the government for 23 years, maintained communal harmony in west Bengal.
Congress president Sonia Gandhi said Mr Basu had a rich fulfilled and glorious life. He served his country, his party and his state with whole hearted dedication for over half a century. He was a towering figure in our national life, whose noble vision, superb judgment and depth of experience we all valued greatly. Describing Jyoti Basu as a great leader of the Communist party of India and Left movement and the country. The party general secretary Prakash Karat said that with a passing away of Mr Basu' an era has passed'. Jyoti Basu was the king of west Bengal. He was a true patriot and democrat, and a great source of inspiration. He made momentous contributions to public life and to the development of west Bengal. He will be best remembered as a leader of masses. His demise leaves a void, difficult to fill.
Jyoti Basu contributed a lot to India- its democratic, political equilibrium and its democratic well-being. His biggest gift to west Bengal was land reform. Almost all modern Indian politicians have been inspired in some way or the other by Basu.
Basu's demise is an irreparable loss to not only the left movement but also the entire country. The country has lost a statesman and a man of wisdom. Jyoti Basu was the unquestioned leader of the CPI(M) He reformed and transformed west Bengal in to a well governed state. India has lost a great leader , an able administrator, a true Marxist and a great patriot. He will be long remembered for his outstanding work in implementing effective agrarian reforms that substantially reduced rural poverty.
