14 Sabarimala pilgrims from Vijayawada in Andhrapradesh were killed when the lorry in which they were traveling overturned after hitting a wall at the accident -prone Kanamala cause way, near erumeli on Tuesday 12th January,2010, with just a month to go for the first anniversary of one of the worst accidents on February 17,2009 which claimed 15 lives.
Earlier in the day, three Ayyappa devotees from Karnataka on their way to sabarimala from Bangalore died when the bus they were traveling in overturned at kottur in Kasaragod nearly 50 other passengers in the bus including children were injured in the accident.
In the Kanamala accident, the pilgrims were on their way to the sannidhanam to witness the Makarajyothi when the tragedy hit them. The lorry was thickly packed with at least 42 persons and had used sand filled gunny bags as seats, which eventually led to the death toll to rise as these bags fell on the victims when the lorry overturned. The accident occurred at 7.30pm. It was on February 17, last year that 15 sabarimala pilgrims from Andra Pradesh lost their lives.
