Minister for Food and Consumer Affairs C. Divakaran announced on Tuesday, 7th July 2009, that the government was planning to utilize the services of school children to monitor the quality of goods in retail market and prevent consumers from being fleeced by unscrupulous traders.
He inaugurating the state consumer Helpline established by the department of consumer affairs and the kerala state IT mission, the minister said students who were members of the school- level consumer clubs would be enlisted as volunteers to carry out periodic inspections in the open market. Student teams would be deployed to check the quality of goods and ensure the accuracy of weights and measures used by traders.
Mr Divakaran said the government had received a large number of complaints about quality and faulty weights and measures. The minister said the government was working on a project to modernize the public distribution system and create a computer network linking ration shops in the state. ‘Efforts are on to strengthen the consumer forums all over the state and use technology for quality control.
For Consumers who are too intimidated by the procedures and formalities in moving the consumer forum for redressal of their grievances. The department of consumer affairs now offers a solution. The department launched a citizen call centre to receive consumer complaints; any one a grievance can dial the toll free number 18004251550 to avail themselves of the service. Complaint would be addressed with in 48 hours. Complaints to be sent to the chief ministers sutharya keralam programme can be registered at the number 155300 Citizens can dial the same number to clarify their doubts on the service offered by different government departments. Those using services other than the BSNL can dial the number 0471 2115054 or 2115098
