WORLD TEACHERS DAY- OCTOBER-5

WORLD TEACHERS DAY- OCTOBER-5

World Teachers' Day is observed on 5 October every year to honour teachers and the role they play in shaping society. In 2026, it falls on a Monday, 5 October, and marks 60 years of the 1966 ILO/UNESCO Recommendation on the Status of Teachers. The theme is "Standing with teachers: 60 years of protecting the profession, advancing its status and shaping our futures". The day will look at the progress made in recognising teachers. It will also draw attention to present challenges such as professional autonomy, working conditions, salaries, and workload. Policymakers and society are called upon to protect and raise the status of the teaching profession.

The main global event in 2026 will be held at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris. It is organised jointly by UNESCO, the ILO, UNICEF, and Education International, and will be opened by UNESCO Director-

It is a day to celebrate how teachers are transforming education but also to reflect on the support they need to fully deploy their talent and vocation, and to rethink the way ahead for the profession globally. For 2026, UNESCO has announced the theme, “Standing with teachers: 60 years of protecting the profession, advancing its status and shaping our futures.” The focus is not only on recognising teachers but on examining whether education systems are giving them the professional and material support needed to do their work .This is also the year in which the 1966 recommendation is being revised. UNESCO says the teaching profession is facing newer pressures linked to digital technologies, climate change, inclusion, migration and displacement. It has also pointed to concerns around teachers’ autonomy, participation in policy-making, salaries, workloads and working environments. The review is intended to consider how the international framework should respond to these changes.
