International Mother Language Day is a worldwide annual observance held on 21 February to promote awareness of linguistic and cultural diversity and to promote multilingualism. First announced by UNESCO on 17 November 1999, it was formally recognized by the United Nations General Assembly with the adoption of UN resolution 56/262 in 2002.

Mother Language Day is part of a broader initiative "to promote the preservation and protection of all languages used by people of the world" as adopted by the UN General Assembly on 16 May 2007 in UN resolution 61/266,which also established 2008 as the International Year of Languages. The idea to celebrate International Mother Language Day was the initiative of Bangladesh.

In Bangladesh, 21 February 1952 is the anniversary of the day when the Bengalis of the then-Pakistani province of East Bengal (which is now the independent state of Bangladesh) fought for recognition of their Bengali language as an official central state language instead of a provincial language.The day is also observed by Indian Bengalis in the states of West Bengal, Assam, Jharkhand, and Tripura, as well as in the union territory of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.The idea to celebrate International Mother Language Day was the initiative of Bangladesh. It was approved at the 1999 UNESCO General Conference and has been observed throughout the world since 2000.UNESCO believes in the importance of cultural and linguistic diversity for sustainable societies. It is within its mandate for peace that it works to preserve the differences in cultures and languages that foster tolerance and respect for others.Multilingual and multicultural societies exist through their languages which transmit and preserve traditional knowledge and cultures in a sustainable way.Linguistic diversity is increasingly threatened as more and more languages disappear. Globally 40 per cent of the population does not have access to an education in a language they speak or understand

ഇന്ന് ഫെബ്രുവരി 21 ലോക മാതൃഭാഷാ ദിനം.

ഭാഷ ഒരു ജനതയുടെ ആത്മാവും സംസ്കാരത്തിന്റെ അടയാളവുമാണ്.1999-ല്‍ യുനെസ്‌കോ പ്രഖ്യാപിച്ച ഈ ദിനം, ഭാഷാവൈവിധ്യത്തെയും മാതൃഭാഷ സംരക്ഷണത്തെയും ലോകത്തെ ഓര്‍മിപ്പിക്കുന്നു.സ്വന്തം ഭാഷയെ സ്നേഹിക്കൂ, സംരക്ഷിക്കൂ, തലമുറകള്‍ക്ക് കൈമാറൂ."മറ്റുള്ള ഭാഷകൾ കേവലം ധാത്രി മാർ മർത്യന്നു പെറ്റമ്മ തൻ ഭാഷ താൻ….”മലയാളമാണ് എന്റെ ഭാഷഎന്റെ ഭാഷ എന്റെ വീടാണ്.എന്റെ ആകാശമാണ്.എന്നെ തഴുകുന്ന കാറ്റാണ്.എന്നെ ദാഹം ശമിപ്പിക്കുന്ന കുളിർ വെള്ളമാണ്.എന്റെ അമ്മയുടെ തലോടലും ശാസനയുമാണ്ഏത് നാട്ടിലെത്തിയാലും ഞാൻ സ്വപ്‍നം കാണുന്നത് എന്റെ ഭാഷയിലാണ്.എന്റെ ഭാഷ ഞാൻ തന്നെയാണ്ബംഗ്ലാദേശിൽ ആചരിച്ചുവരുന്ന ഭാഷാപ്രസ്ഥാന ദിനത്തിന് അന്തർദ്ദേശീയ തലത്തിൽ ലഭിച്ച അംഗീകാരമെന്ന നിലയിലാണ് ലോക മാതൃഭാഷാദിനത്തിന്റെ ഉദ്ഭവം. 1952 ഫെബ്രുവരി 21-ന് ബെംഗാളീ ഭാഷാപ്രസ്ഥാനത്തിന്റെ ഒരു പ്രതിക്ഷേധ സമരത്തിലുണ്ടായ പൊലീസ് വെടിവയ്പ്പിൽ കൊല്ലപ്പെട്ടവരുടെ സ്മരണക്കായാണ് ബംഗ്ലാദേശിൽ ഭാഷാപ്രസ്ഥാന ദിനം ആചരിക്കുന്നത്.

ഭാഷ്യാ സാംസ്കാരിക വൈവിധ്യവും ബഹുഭാഷാത്വവും പ്രചരിപ്പിക്കുക എന്ന ഉദ്ദേശത്തോടെ യുനെസ്കോ ആസ്ഥാനത്തിലും അംഗരാഷ്ട്രങ്ങളിലും ലോക മാതൃഭാഷാദിനം വർഷംതോറും ആചരിക്കപ്പെടുന്നു.കേരളത്തിലെ എല്ലാ വിദ്യാലയങ്ങളിലും അധ്യാപകരും വിദ്യാർത്ഥികളും ഭാഷാ പ്രതിജ്ഞ ചൊല്ലാൻ സർക്കാർ നിർദേശിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്.
