Brother Roger, founder of Taizé Community -- Prof. John Kurakar

 Brother Roger

Brother Roger (12 May 1915 – 16 August 2005),was a Swiss Christian leader and monastic brother. In 1940 Roger founded the Taizé Community, an ecumenical monastic community in Burgundy, France, serving as its first prior until his murder in 2005.Towards the end of his life, the Taizé Community was attracting international attention, welcoming thousands of young pilgrims every week.
Brother Roger came to this village in Burgundy from Switzerland in 1940 . There were only a few wounded soldiers up in the hill at that time , victims of World War II. He stayed here nursing them. Later some young people joined him and the Ecumenical Community was born. Today they are all around the globe, helping young people to hope beyond hope. Tens of thousands of young and old come here every day to share this community living experience. Living a life of poverty and simplicity amidst the richness around. They come searching for a more meaningful life.Hundreds of volunteers come to this beautiful village and help in the mission of building a peaceful world, rooted in spirituality.
Dr Abraham karickam rembered the great man Brothet Roger and his Taize community.
"Taize has been my home away from home for the past half century and I traveled around the world with the brothers and sisters. Most memorable journey was the one with brother Roger in Calcutta way back in 1976, when we worked with Mother Theresa and the Missionaries of Charity. '
