15 YEAR-OLD BOY DIES OF DIPHTHERIA IN MALAPPURAM

An
unvaccinated 15-year-old boy died of diphtheria Saturday in Kerala’s Malappuram
district, where the Muslim community is known to be reluctant
to immunisation.

Dr Ummer Farook said the district has recorded two clinically-confirmed
diphtheria cases this year.“Today’s victim was a student of an Arabic college.
As many as 98 other students in the institution have not taken any vaccine due
to resistance from within the community. However, after one student fell ill,
others were willing.”
Last year,
five diphtheria cases, two of which resulted in deaths, had been reported in
the Malappuram district. A health department survey conducted in the district
last year revealed that there are 1.72 lakh unvaccinated children in the 7-15
years age group, said Dr Farook.A meeting is slated to be held Monday to find
ways to blunt the opposition to vaccination drives.
മലപ്പുറം ജില്ലയില്‍ ഡിഫ്തീരിയ ബാധിച്ച് പതിനഞ്ചുകാരന്‍ മരിച്ചു. കോഴിക്കോട് മെഡിക്കല്‍ കോളേജില്‍ ചികില്‍സയിലായിരുന്ന മലപ്പുറം പുളിക്കല്‍ മുഹമ്മദ് അഫ്‌സാസ്(15)ആണ് മരിച്ചത്. സംസ്ഥാനത്ത് ഒരാഴ്ച്ചക്കിടെ രോഗം ബാധിച്ച് മരിക്കുന്ന രണ്ടാമത്തെ ആളാണ് മുഹമ്മദ് അഫ്‌സാസ്.ഡിഫ്തീരിയ മരണം റിപ്പോര്‍ട്ട് ചെയ്ത സാഹചര്യത്തില്‍ പ്രതിരോധ പ്രവര്‍ത്തനങ്ങള്‍ ആരോഗ്യ വകുപ്പ് ഊര്‍ജ്ജിതമാക്കി. സ്‌കൂളുകള്‍ കേന്ദ്രീകരിച്ച്
കുത്തിവെപ്പെടുക്കാത്തവരേയും ഇടക്കുവിട്ടു പോയവരേയും കണ്ടെത്താനാണ് ആദ്യശ്രമം.
എന്നാല്‍ കുത്തിവെപ്പെടുക്കണമെന്ന മുന്നറിയിപ്പ്
ആവര്‍ത്തിച്ച് നല്‍കുമ്പോഴും പ്രതിരോധ നടപടികളോട് വിമുഖത കാട്ടുന്നവരുമുണ്ട്. താനൂര്‍ മുനിസിപ്പാലിറ്റിയില്‍ പ്രതിരോധ കുത്തിവെപ്പ് ഊര്‍ജ്ജിതമാക്കാന്‍
ആരോഗ്യവകുപ്പ് ശ്രമം തുടങ്ങിയിട്ടുണ്ട്.
പത്തു ദിവസത്തിനകം താനൂര്‍ മുനിസിപ്പാലിറ്റിയിലെ മുഴുവന്‍ സ്‌കൂളുകളിലും എത്തി പ്രതിരോധ കുത്തിവെപ്പ് സ്വീകരിക്കാത്തവരെ
കണ്ടെത്തി മരുന്ന് നല്‍കാനാണ് ആദ്യനീക്കം. ജില്ലയിലെ മുഴുവന്‍ ആരോഗ്യ പ്രവര്‍ത്തകരും ഇതിനായി താനൂരില്‍ എത്തും. കുത്തിവെപ്പ് എടുക്കില്ലെന്ന
നിലപാട് സ്വീകരിച്ച മുഴുവന്‍ പേരെയും വീടുകളിലെത്തി കാണും. ഇത് മറ്റിടങ്ങളിലേക്കും
വ്യാപിപ്പിക്കുന്നതിനാണ് ആരോഗ്യവകുപ്പ്
ലക്ഷ്യമിടുന്നത്.
