MAN RACKS UP HUGE MEDICAL BILL AFTER TAKING A SELFIE WITH A RATTLESNAKE

Earlier this month a guy named Todd Fassler was bitten by a rattlesnake in San Diego, USA.In itself this isn't terribly unusual - the Centre for Disease Control estimates that roughly 7000 to 8000 people a year get bit by a venomous snake in the United States.Somewhere between five and six people die from these bites each year.But Fassler's snakebite earlier this month will likely leave him hurting for longer than most. And not just out of the shame of being bitten while taking a selfie with the snake,

The bulk of his hospital bill, US$83,000 of it, is due to pharmacy charges. Specifically, charges for the antivenom used to treat the bite. KGTV reports that Fassler depleted the antivenom supplies at two local hospitals during his five-day visit. Nobody expects antivenom to be cheap. There's currently only one commercially available antivenom for treating venomous snakebites in the United States - CroFab, manufactured by UK-based BTG plc. And with a stable market of 7000 to 8000 snakebite victims per year and no competitors, business is pretty good. BTG's latest annual report shows CroFab sales topped out at close to US$98 million last fiscal year. The antivenom costs hospitals roughly US$2300 per vial, according to Bloomberg, with a typical dose requiring four to six vials. രണ്ട് ആശുപത്രികളിൽ നിന്നാണ് ഇയാൾക്ക് ആവശ്യമായ വിഷബാധയ്ക്കുള്ള മറുമരുന്ന് (ആന്റിവെനം) എത്തിച്ചത്. ഒരു ചെറിയ കുപ്പി ആന്റിവെനത്തിന് ഒരു ലക്ഷം രൂപയ്ക്ക് മുകളിലാണ് വില. ഇത്തരത്തിൽ നിരവധി കുപ്പി മരുന്നുകൾ ഇയാൾക്ക് നൽകേണ്ടി വന്നു. ഇതോടൊപ്പം കൈയിലുണ്ടായ മാരകമായ മുറിവിനും കൂടി ചികിത്സ നടത്തിയതോടെ നല്ലൊരു സംഖ്യയായി. ഫാസ്‌ലറിന്റെ ഇൻഷൂറൻസ് കന്പനി ആശുപത്രിയുമായി ചർച്ച നടത്തുന്നുണ്ടെങ്കിലും ഇതുവരെ ഇക്കാര്യത്തിൽ തീരുമാനമായിട്ടില്ല. ജീവൻ തിരികെ കിട്ടിയ ശേഷം ഫാസ്‌ലർ ആദ്യം ചെയ്തത് കഴിഞ്ഞ ഒരു വർഷത്തോളമായി താൻ വളർത്തിവന്ന റാറ്റ്സ്നേക്ക് ഇനത്തിൽപ്പെട്ട മറ്റൊരു പാന്പിനെ തുറന്നുവിടുകയായിരുന്നു.
