Five bodies have been recovered from icy seas during an operation to rescue hundreds of passengers stuck on a burning ferry near Greece.

The Italian-flagged car ferry, the Norman Atlantic, which was carrying 478 passengers and crew, was making its way from Patras in Greece to Ancona in Italy when the fire broke out.An international rescue operation was launched to save the remaining passengers trapped onboard the ferry in treacherous weather in the Adriatic Sea.Greece's maritime minister, Miltiadis Varvitsiotis, said Italian authorities confirmed four bodies had been recovered.At least one passenger - a Greek national - was previously confirmed to have died as a result of the disaster.Two of the passengers on the ferry were Australians travelling on Turkish passports, the ABC can confirm.Italy's navy said it had completed the evacuation of all passengers and most of the crew on Monday afternoon (local time).

The navy said only a skeleton crew of nine men remained on board the vessel, which was due to be towed to port.Helicopter crews were winching people to safety despite gale-force winds and thick smoke.A navy team was onboard earlier with a doctor, nurse and flight operator to help passengers board helicopters, a spokesman said.Some survivors have arrived in Bari, Italy, aboard a Singapore-flagged cargo container ship helping with the rescue operation.Other survivors have been transferred to the Italian navy amphibious transport ship the San Giorgio, which is also coordinating the rescue.

One person suffering from heart disease was taken to the Italian mainland by helicopter, the navy said.Bad weather hampered earlier efforts to attach cables to the ferry for towing.A fire broke out on the car deck of the ferry 44 nautical miles from Corfu early on Sunday morning (local time).The crew sent a distress signal and some passengers used their mobile phones to call Greek TV stations in desperation, as they tried to avoid smoke from the fire below and gale-force winds and hail from above.

Two people plucked off the ship by a Greek army helicopter fell into six-metre waves below.Rough seas and thick fog in the area also led to the collision of two merchant ships, resulting in at least one death.Earlier, Italy's coastguard confirmed the first casualty of the disaster when it recovered the body of a man who had thrown himself off the burning ferry.Officials said most of the passengers were Greek, but the manifest included names from several other countries including Germany, Italy, Austria, Turkey, France and the Netherlands.The Italian navy said two Italian air force helicopters, one Greek helicopter and an Italian plane were taking part in the rescue, winching up passengers in small groups.Other aircraft and 10 ships were also taking part in the operation in support roles.Seven merchant ships gathered around the ferry to act as a windbreak as firefighting vessels made their way to the scene.Greek coastguard spokesman Nikos Lagkadianos said the heavy rain that was hampering the rescue had helped contain the fire, although the ship was still burning.

The chief executive of the Visenti Group, which owns the ferry, said it recently passed a technical inspection after repairs to a faulty fire door."The tests confirmed that the boat was in full working order," Carlos Visentini said.He said the company had addressed minor flaws found after checks by Greek authorities in the port of Patras."The inspectors did uncover a slight malfunction in one of the fire doors, number 112, situated on bridge number 5 - the one where, according to the information we have so far, the fire developed," he said."This was immediately repaired to the satisfaction of the inspectors and therefore the boat was able to continue in service."

             പ്രതികൂല കാലാവസ്ഥമൂലം ഇതുവരെ കപ്പലിലെ തീ പൂര്‍ണമായി അണയ്ക്കാനായിട്ടില്ല. പ്രക്ഷുബ്ധമായ കടലും ശക്തമായ കാറ്റുമാണ് രക്ഷാപ്രവര്‍ത്തനം ദുഷ്‌കരമാക്കുന്നത്. കാറ്റും പുകയും കാരണം ഹെലികോപ്റ്ററുകള്‍ക്ക് കപ്പലിലേയ്ക്ക് അടുക്കാന്‍ കഴിയുന്നില്ല.ഞായറാഴ്ചയാണ് 422 യാത്രക്കാരും 56 ജീവനക്കാരുമായി പടിഞ്ഞാറന്‍ ഗ്രീസിലെ പാത്രസ് തുറമുഖത്ത് നിന്ന് ഇറ്റലിയിലെ അങ്കോണയിലേക്ക് പോവുകയായിരുന്ന നോര്‍ത്തമന്‍ അറ്റ്‌ലാന്റിക് എന്ന കപ്പലിന് തീപിടിച്ചത്. കപ്പലിലെ കാര്‍ ഡെക്കിലാണ് ആദ്യം തീ കണ്ടത്. പിന്നീട് മറ്റു ഭാഗങ്ങളിലേയ്ക്കും പടരുകയായിരുന്നു. കപ്പലില്‍ നിന്ന് 358 യാത്രക്കാരെയാണ് ഇറ്റാലിയന്‍ കോസ്റ്റ്ഗാര്‍ഡിന് ഇതുവരെ രക്ഷിക്കാനായത്. ഇവരില്‍ കൂടുതല്‍ പേരെയും ഹെലികോപ്റ്റര്‍ ഉപയോഗിച്ചാണ് രക്ഷപ്പെടുത്തിയത്. ഇറ്റലിയും ഗ്രീസും സംയുക്തമായാണ് രക്ഷാപ്രവര്‍ത്തനം നടത്തുന്നത്.
കപ്പലിലെ യാത്രക്കാരില്‍ 268 പേര്‍ ഗ്രീക്കുകരും 44 പേര്‍ തുര്‍ക്കിക്കാരും 44 പേര്‍ ഇറ്റലില്‍ നിന്നുള്ളവരും 22 പേര്‍ അല്‍ബേനിയക്കാരും 18 പേര്‍ ജര്‍മന്‍കാരുമാണ്. ജീവനക്കാരില്‍ 22 പേര്‍ ഇറ്റലിക്കാരും 34 പേര്‍ ഗ്രീക്കുകാരുമാണ്.
