തുടര്ന്ന് കടലിന്റെ മക്കള്ക്കായി നടത്തിയത് എണ്ണമില്ലാത്ത സമരങ്ങള്. പാര്ശ്വവല്ക്കരിക്കപ്പെട്ട ഒരു വിഭാഗത്തിന്റെ ഉന്നമനത്തിനായി കാഴ്ച വച്ച പോരാട്ടവീര്യം തന്നെയാണ്ഫാദര് കോച്ചേരിയെ അനശ്വരനാക്കുന്നത്
His efforts in launching a World Forum of Fisherpeople earned
him the ‘Earth Trustee’ award of the United Nations. ‘’Kocherry, who had
spearheaded many agitations for the fishermen community, was active even in the
recent protests against the Koodankulam nuclear power plant,” said T Peter,
secretary, National Fishworkers Forum. He is survived by four sisters and
three brothers. Three of his brothers had pre-deceased him.Scores of people
belonging to various walks of life paid last respects to priest and noted
activist Fr Thomas Kocherry who passed away here the other day.
The body was kept at the
Holy Cross Catholic Church, Muttada, from Sunday morning for the public to pay
homage. K Muraleedharan MLA was among those who paid tribute to Fr Kocherry.The
funeral would be held at 3.30 pm in the church on Monday. Kocherry, who was in
the forefront of various struggles for social justice and who led many
movements for the fishermen community, died of cardiac arrest in the
‘Divyarakshaka Ashramam’ on the premises of the Muttada Church on Saturday
evening. He was 73.The funeral rites would begin at 3 pm.
