ഉത്സവം നടക്കയാണമ്പലമുറ്റത്തു-
യർന്നുജ്ജ്വലൽ ദീവട്ടികളിളക്കും വെളിച്ചത്തിൽ.

In the waving bright torch lights held high
A festival is going on in the temple courtyard.

പതയും നെറ്റിപ്പട്ടപ്പൊന്നരുവികളോലും
പതിനഞ്ചാനക്കരിം പാറകളുടെ മുമ്പിൽ.

In front of fifteen black rock like elephants
Wearing frothing gold rivulets of caparisons.

വാദ്യമേളത്തിൻ താള പാതത്തിൽ തലയാട്ടി-
പ്പൂത്ത താഴ്വര പോലെ മരുവീ പുരുഷാരം.

The crowd stood like a valley in bloom
Nodding their heads in time with the drum beats.

4.
സംഘമായ് മുറുക്കിക്കൊണ്ടിരിക്കും ചിലർ ചൊൽവൂ
തങ്ങളിൽ “കുറുമ്പനാണാ നടുക്കെഴും കൊമ്പൻ.”

“That tusker in the middle is naughty”, said some
among themselves, in a group chewing betel leaves.

പൊൽത്തിടമ്പേറിദ്ദേവൻ പെരുമാറുമാപ്പെരും
മസ്തകകടാഹത്തിൽ മന്ത്രിപ്പൂ പിശാചുക്കൾ.

Devils whisper in the large brain cauldron
Upon which rests the deity embossed gold shield.

മുഴുവൻ തോർന്നിട്ടില്ലാ മുൻ മദജലം, പക്ഷേ-
യെഴുന്നള്ളത്തിൽക്കൂട്ടീ എന്തൊരു തലപ്പൊക്കം!

Even though the earlier musth flow has not dried,
He was in the line up, how majestic his stance.

വൻപുകൾ ചൂഴും വളർ കൊമ്പുകളനുമാത്രം
വെമ്പുകയാവാം മഹാ സഹസങ്ങളെപ്പുൽകാൻ.

Those renowned big tusks maybe thirsting
Every moment to embark on great adventures.

കണ്ണുകൾ നിണസ്വപ്നം കാൺകയാം, തുമ്പിക്കരം
മണ്ണു തോണ്ടുന്നൂ – പാവം വിറപ്പൂ ശാന്തിക്കാരൻ !

Eyes maybe seeing bloody dreams, trunk
Is digging the ground – the poor priest is trembling!

ശബ്ദ സാഗരം കിടന്നലതല്ലട്ടേ തീയിൻ
ഭിത്തികളെരിയട്ടേ, തിരക്കീടട്ടേ നരർ.

Let the ocean of sound swell and heave,
Let walls of fire burn, let humans surge.

കൂച്ചു ചങ്ങല തന്നെ കാൽത്തൂണിൽ തളയ്ക്കട്ടേ
കൂർത്ത തോട്ടി ചാരട്ടേ കൃശ ഗാത്രനീപ്പാപ്പാൻ

The puny mahout, let him fetter chains
On the pillar like legs and lean his sharp goad.

കരുതീലിവയൊന്നുമാ പ്രൗഢമസ്തിഷ്കത്തി-
ന്നിരുളിൽ ഭ്രാന്തിൻ നിലാവോലുമാ കൊലക്കൊമ്പൻ.

None of these that great tusker considered in the
Dark recess of his crazed, loony, majestic brain.

12.
സഞ്ചരിക്കുകയാണാസ്സാഹസി, സങ്കല്പത്തിൽ
വൻ ചെവികളാം പുള്ളിസ്വാതന്ത്ര്യ പത്രം വീശി.

That adventurer is travelling in his imagination
Waving the great ears of speckled deed of freedom

തൻ ചെറുനാളിൻ കേളീവീഥിയിൽ, വസന്തത്താൽ
സഞ്ചിതവിഭവമാം സഹ്യ സാനു ദേശത്തിൽ.

In the playgrounds of his youth, in the valleys
Of Sahya ranges, made dense by Spring time.

ഉന്നിദ്രം തഴയ്ക്കുമീ താഴ്വര പോലൊന്നുണ്ടോ
തന്നെപ്പോലൊരാനയ്ക്കു തിരിയാൻ വേറിട്ടിടം ?

Is there a better place than this thriving lively valley
For an elephant like him to roam about ?

മലവാഴകൾ പൂത്തു മാണിക്യമുതിർക്കുന്നു,
മലയാനിലൻ വന്നു മസ്തകം തലോടുന്നു.

Wild bananas in bloom shed rubies,
Mountain breeze comes to caress the cranium.

പട്ടിലും മൃദുലമാം പല്ലവങ്ങളു, മീന്തൽ
പ്പട്ടിലിൻ മുളകളും വിരുന്നിനൊരുക്കുന്നു.

Sprouts softer than silk, palm fronds
And bamboo thickets prepare banquet.

കാട്ടിലെപ്പൂഞ്ചോലകൾ കൈകളിലമൃതത്തെ
ക്കാട്ടിലും മേലാം തണ്ണീർ കാട്ടിയും വിളിക്കുന്നു.

Wild brooks carrying water that
Excels nectar are beckoning.

എ,ന്തിതിലൊന്നും മുന്മട്ടാശകൾ മുളപ്പീലാ
ചിന്തകൾ കടന്നൽക്കൂടാക്കുമാത്തലയ്ക്കുള്ളിൽ.

In that head turned into a wasp’s nest by thoughts
Alas, there is no desire as before for any of these.

നീട്ടിവെച്ചീടും കാലിൽപ്പാൽച്ചറം തെറിപ്പിച്ചു
കാട്ടു പാതയിലൂടെ നടന്നാൻ മഹാസത്വൻ.

That colossal shape walked on the forest path
Spraying plant sap on long striding legs.

കാറ്റിലെന്തിതു, പുതുപ്പാലപ്പൂ സുഗന്ധമോ?
കാട്ടിലെപ്പനകൾ തൻ കള്ളൊലി സൗരഭ്യമോ?

What’s this scent? Fragrance of new devil tree
Flowers or aroma of toddy dripping from wild palms?

മെരുവിൻ മദദ്രവമണമോ? തുമ്പിക്കയ്യാൽ
ചെറുതെന്നലിൽ തപ്പിച്ചെറ്റിട നിന്നാനവൻ.

The fragrance of civet cat’s musk? He stood
Awhile, searching the light breeze with his trunk.

പാറയിൽ നിന്നും ജലം പോലെ, വിസ്മയമേ, തൻ
വീര്യമൊക്കെയും വാർന്നു പോവതായ് ത്തോന്നീടുന്നു.

Like water from a rock, amazing, he feels
All his valor is draining out of his body.

വിഷ വല്ലരി തിന്നോ? വിപിനാന്തരാളത്തിൻ
വിഷമജ്വരം വന്നു തന്നെയും ബാധിച്ചെന്നോ?

Was it a poisonous creeper that I ate? Or
Have I caught the dreaded recurring fever ?

ഹസ്തകൃഷ്ടമായ് മഹാ ശാഖകളൊടിയുന്നു;
മസ്തകത്തിൽ ചെമ്മണ്ണിൻ പൂമ്പൊടി പൊഴിയുന്നു.

Pulled down by trunk, great branches snap;
Fine dust of red clay falls on the cranium.

ഉൾത്തരിപ്പേലും ഗണ്ഡഭിത്തിചേർത്തുരയ്ക്കവേ
രക്തഗന്ധിയാം പാ, ലാപ്പാലയിൽ നിന്നൂറുന്നു.

Blood smelling sap oozes from the devil tree
As the itchy cheek is rubbed hard against it.

26.
നിർഗ്ഗതബല, മെന്നാലുഗ്രവീര്യം തന്നുടൽ
നിഗ്രഹോത്സുകം സ്നേഹവ്യഗ്രമെങ്കിലും ചിത്തം.

Mighty valorous the body, though drained of strength
Mind, though affectionate, now bent on murder.

27.
നീളവേ നടന്നാനാ നിസ്പൃഹൻ, വസന്തത്തിൻ
കാലടി മണം കോലും കാട്ടു പാതയിലൂടെ.

That disinterested one walked along, on the
Forest way, fragrant with the footprint of Spring.

28.
അവിടെപ്പുള്ളിപ്പുലി പൊന്തയിൽ പളുങ്ങുന്നു-
ണ്ടവനെക്കൊമ്പിൽ കോർക്കാൻ തൻ കരൾ തരിപ്പീല.

There in the bush hides a leopard, but there was
No urge in his heart to skewer him on the tusks.

29.
വാൽക്കുവാൽ മണ്ടീടുന്ന വാനരഭീരുക്കളും
വായ്ക്കുവായ് പുച്ഛിക്കുന്നുണ്ടാവില്ല വക്കാണിപ്പാൻ.

Even the cowardly monkeys who swing tail to tail
Are probably not constantly teasing to pick up a fight.

30.
കാട്ടു പൊയ്കയിൽ കൊമ്പിട്ടടിപ്പൂ മഹിഷങ്ങൾ,
തേറ്റയാൽ ഘർഷിക്കുന്നു സൂകരം വൃക്ഷോദരം.

Buffaloes beat their horns on forest ponds
And wild boars rub their tusks against tree trunk.

31.
ചെവി തേറുന്നൂ വേടരേറുമാടത്തിൽ പാടും
ചെറുതേനൊലിഗ്ഗാന, മരുതേ ശ്രദ്ധിക്കുവാൻ.

The honey sweet songs of hunters in
Tree huts reach the ears, should not pay heed.

32.
പകൽ പോയ്, മടയിങ്കൽ മാമരനിഴലുകൾ-
ക്കകിടേകുവാൻ വീണ്ടു മാർദ്രയാമിരുളെത്തി.

The day is done, kind darkness arrived
In the cave to nurse the shadows of large trees.

33.
തൻ നീഡവൃക്ഷം തേടിത്താഴുന്നൂ ചിറകുകൾ,
വിൺനീലപ്പൂവൻ മയിൽ വിരുത്തീ പുള്ളിപ്പീലി!

Wings seeking the tree with their nest come down,
Sky, the blue peacock, spreads its speckled plumage

വനമല്ലിക പൂത്തു വാസന ചൊരിയുന്നൂ,
വനദേവിമാർ നൃത്തം വെയ്ക്കുന്നു നിലാക്കുത്തിൽ.

Wild jasmine blossoms and spreads fragrance
Forest fairies dance in moon light.

35.
ഇരവിൻ വേട്ടക്കാർതന്നോട്ടത്തിലൊടിയുന്നു
ചെറുചില്ലകൾ – ഓരി ശവത്തെ വിളിക്കുന്നു.

Small twigs break as night hunters sprint -
Jackal howls for dead bodies.

ഈ വരും വിരാവമെ, ന്തിരുളിൻ നിശ്ശബ്ദത
ചീവിടും നൂറായിരം ചീവീടിൻ വിലപമോ?

What’s that uproar, is it the lament of a hundred
Thousand crickets whittling the silence of darkness?

ഉത്തരക്ഷണത്തിൽത്തൻ ചേതനയുണർന്നി, താ
യുത്സവരംഗത്തിൽ നിന്നുയരും വാദ്യാരവം.

The next moment his senses awoke, there
From the festival scene, the music of instruments.

38.
വകവെച്ചീലാ വമ്പ, നവനിഗ്ഘോഷം വെറും
വനപല്വല വർഷാകാല മണ്ഡൂകാലാപം;

The mighty one heeded not, for him this gala was
The riot of frogs in monsoon in a shallow pond.

39.
വരിയായുദ്യോതിക്കുമിദ്ദീവെട്ടികൾ മുറ്റും
വനകുഞ്ജകദ്യോതഖദ്യോതശതം മാത്രം!

These torches that burn in a row are all but
Hundreds of fireflies lighting up wild creepers.

40.
അകലുന്നിതു രാത്രിയാരണ്യ മരക്കൊമ്പിൽ
പകൽ പിന്നെയും ലൂതാതന്തുക്കൾ ബന്ധിക്കുന്നു.

The night parts and in wild tree branches
Day again knots spider webs.

41.
ഗൂഢമാം വള്ളിക്കെട്ടിന്നുള്ളിൽ നിന്നെഴുന്നേറ്റു
പേട മാനുകളുടെ പേടിയെത്തി നോക്കുന്നു.

Rising from the secret tangle of vines
The fear of does peeps.

എന്തതീപ്പുതുവനപാതയിൽ പരിചിത-
ഗന്ധമൊന്നുലാവുന്നു പ്രാണ നിർവ്വാണപ്രദം.

What, in this new forest way wafts
A familiar smell – promising soul relief.

മാമര ശിഖരങ്ങളൊടിഞ്ഞ വടു കാണാം
താമരയിലകൾ തൻ വടിവാമടികളും,

Large trees with scars of broken branches
And foot prints large as lotus leaves are seen,

44.
ആവി പൊങ്ങിന പച്ചപ്പിണ്ടവും, ഭാഗ്യം ഭാഗ്യ-
മാ വഴി നടന്നിട്ടുണ്ടാനകൾ കുടിക്കുവാൻ.

Also steaming fresh droppings, lucky,
Luckily elephants have gone that way to drink.

45.
ഉടനേ കേൾക്കായവന്നുത്സവ രംഗത്തിൽ നി-
ന്നുയരും ശൃംഗധ്വനിയ, ല്ലൊരു ചിന്നം വിളി!

Forthwith he heard rising from the festival
Ground a great horn, no a trumpeting call!

46.
പുലർവായുവിലാടും കാശചാമരങ്ങൾ തൻ
തെളിവാർനിഴൽ ചിന്നിത്തേങ്ങുമൊരാറ്റിൻ വക്കിൽ.

On the banks of a river, sobbing with the clear reflection
Of durba grass whisks swaying in morning breeze.

47.
അഗ്രഭാഗത്തിൽ കാണായ് വാരണ നിവഹങ്ങൾ,
സഹ്യ മാമലയുടെ സൗന്ദര്യ സന്ദോഹങ്ങൾ!

In front can be seen herds of elephants,
Beautiful assembly from Sahya Ranges!

48.
കാൽക്ഷണാലവൻ മുന്നോട്ടാഞ്ഞു – പൊട്ടുന്നൂ കാലിൽ
കൂച്ചു ചങ്ങല, യല്ല കുടിലം വല്ലീ ജാലം.

For half a second he stretches forward – the fetter
Chains snap, not chains, knotted vines of forest.

49.
എന്തിതീക്കോലാഹലം? “ആനയോടി!”യെന്നൊരു
വൻ തിരക്ക, ല്ലെമ്പാടും വളരും കൊടുങ്കാറ്റോ?

What’s this uproar? “The elephant runs amuck”,
People pushed and elbowed, or is it a brewing storm?

50.
ഇരമ്പും മലവെള്ളപ്പൊക്കമോ, കാട്ടാളന്മാ-
രിരുഭാഗവും വളഞ്ഞാർത്തു കാടിളക്കുന്നോ?

Roaring flood from the mountains or wild hunters
Crowding from either side, shouting, scattering animals?

51.
വാനരം മറിയുന്നോ തൻ പുറത്തേറി, പ്പൂത്ത
കാനന വിടപങ്ങൾ പേടി പൂണ്ടോടീടുന്നോ ?

Are monkeys vaulting on my back, are
Flowering trees running away from fear ?

52.
കരയുന്നുവോ തൻ കാൽച്ചുവട്ടിൽ ചെടികൾ,
താനുരിയും കൊമ്പത്തുനിന്നൊലിക്കുന്നൊവോ രക്തം ?

Are shrubs weeping under my foot,
Is blood dripping from the branches I strip ?

53.
“കൂർപെറും മാലോകരേ, വെളിയിൽ കടക്കുവിൻ,
ഗോപുരമടയ്ക്കുവ, നമ്പലം കൊലക്കളം!”

“Dear countrymen, go outside, I’ll close
The main gate, the temple is a killing field!”

54.
ഒട്ടിടയ്ക്കാഗ്ഘോഷവും വെട്ടവുമടങ്ങിപ്പോയ്,
ഒട്ടിനിൽക്കുന്നൂ മൂക്കിലൊരു ദുർഗ്ഗന്ധം മാത്രം.

For a little while that uproar and light subsided,
There remained in the nose only a stench.

ഇരുൾ നീങ്ങവേ വീണ്ടുമാ മത്തമാതംഗത്തിൻ
ചെറുകണ്ണുകൾ കണ്ടോ ചേണെഴും തൽ സങ്കല്പം?

As darkness lifted, did the small eyes of that
Crazed elephant see again his powerful vision?

കവിളിൽ പരാക്രമ കന്ദളം മുളയ്ക്കിലും
കളി കൈവിടാത്ത കോമള കളഭങ്ങൾ.

Handsome calves, who remain playful
Despite the sprout of adventure on their cheek.

57.
ആറ്റുനീർ കുടിക്കിലും പ്രണയത്തണ്ണീരിനായ്
നാറ്റിടും പിടകളും – തൻ മഹോത്സവ രംഗം!

Though the cows drank river water, they
Smelled for love water – his great festival ground.

58.
മോന്തിയോ കള്ളിൻ നേരാം കുളിർനീ, രവരൊത്തു
ചീന്തിയോ കരിമ്പൊക്കും കാട്ടുനായ്ങ്കണയവൻ?

Did he drink with them, toddy’s cold clear liquid,
And strip sugar cane sweet wild grass ?

59.
കാട്ടുതാളിലയൊത്ത കോമള കർണ്ണങ്ങളിൽ
കൂട്ടുകാരിയോടവൻ മന്ത്രിച്ചോ മനോരഥം?

Did he whisper his desire in his mate’s
Ears, lovely as the leaves of taro root?

60.
ശൃംഖലയറിയാത്ത സഖിതൻ കാലിൽ പ്രേമ-
ച്ചങ്ങല ബന്ധിച്ചുവോ ചഞ്ചലൽത്തുമ്പിക്കയ്യാൽ ?

On his mate’s legs that had not known fetters
Did he bind a chain of love with his moving trunk?

61.
അറിയില്ലൊരുപക്ഷേ, പന്തലിൽ പലേപടി
മറിയും കുലവാഴയ്ക്കറിയാം പരമാർത്ഥം.

We don’t, perhaps the banana tree in fruit under
The awning, much tumbled, knows the truth.

62.
കൂട്ടമൊത്തവൻ പോകെക്കരളിൽ കാമക്രോധ-
ക്കാട്ടുതീ വാച്ചോരെതിർ കൊമ്പനോടിടഞ്ഞുവോ?

When he was moving with the herd, did he fight with
A tusker carrying the wild fire of sex and anger at heart?

63.
കാനനം കുലുങ്ങവേ, കണ്ടു തൻ പിടികൾ തൻ
മാനസം കൊണ്ടാടവേ, കുട്ടികൾ നടുങ്ങവേ.

He saw, while the forest shook, his cows
Delighted his heart and calves trembled.

64.
ആ യമദണ്ഡങ്ങളോടക്കാലഹസ്തത്തോടു-
മായപോലെതിർത്തോ തന്നടിമച്ചോറിൻ വീര്യം?

Against that mace of Yama, against His hand,
Did the valor of his bondage meals fight at its best ?

65.
ഹുംകൃതി പതയുന്ന ശത്രുകുംഭത്തിൽ പിന്നെ-
ത്തൻ കൊലച്ചിരി കടയോളവും കടത്തിയോ?

Did he impale his killer laughter to the hilt
In the ego frothing forehead of the enemy?

66.
അറിയില്ലൊരുപക്ഷേ, ഗോപുരപുരോഭൂവിൽ
നിറയും മുറിക്കൽകൾ പറയും പരമാർത്ഥം.

We don’t know, perhaps the many broken stones
In front of the main gate might speak the truth.

67.
പിൻ,പുഷ: പ്രകാശത്തിലിരുളിൻ മുമ്പിൽ പേടി-
ച്ചമ്പിയ മാലോകർതൻ വമ്പുകളുണരവേ,

Later, in the light of dawn, as the braggadacio
Of the terrified masses who scattered in the dark awoke.

68.
അമ്പല മതിൽ കേറിയിരുന്നാൻ, ദുർമൃത്യുവിൻ
മുമ്പിലെസ്സേവക്കാര, നൊരു പട്ടാളക്കാരൻ

Mounted on the temple wall, sat a soldier,
A retainer in the service of evil death.

69.
ആ നരനുടെ തോക്കൊന്നലറി, യശരണ-
മാരെയോ വിളിച്ചു കേണടിഞ്ഞാൻ മദഗജം.

That man’s gun roared once, helplessly weeping
And calling someone, the rutting elephant collapsed.

70.
ദ്യോവിനെ വിറപ്പിക്കുമാ വിളി കേട്ടോ, മണി-
ക്കോവിലിൽ മയങ്ങുന്ന മാനവരുടെ ദൈവം?

Did the God of man slumbering within
the fine temple hear that sky shaking call ?

71.
എങ്കിലുമതു ചെന്നു മാറ്റൊലിക്കൊണ്ടൂ, പുത്ര
സങ്കടം സഹിയാത്ത സഹ്യന്റെ ഹൃദയത്തിൽ!

Yet it reached and echoed, in the heart of
Sahya Ranges, disconsolate at son’s grief.
