K. MOHANThe projects on display at the State school science fair here reflect the sensitivity of students to environmental and social issues. Most of the models presented at the Chovva Higher Secondary School (HSS) here focus on waste management, solar energy, and water and energy conservation.A model of a solid waste management plant that treats virtually anything — from asphalt shingles, sewage sludge, concrete, stones to bricks — is showcased by B. Athira, Class X student of Neduveti HSS, Thiruvananthapuram.Meenu Mohan and Sneha Varghese, Class X students of St. Antony’s HS, Mundakkayam, Kottayam, have presented a working model of a waste incinerator-cum-thermal plant at the science fair..A range of value-added products from papaya is arranged by Deepika P. and Alisha Bhanu, Class X students of Sacred Hearts School in Thrissur.
The products include soaps, candles, mosquito repellents, shampoo, and eatables. Mufeed M. and Akash K., Class X and IX students respectively of Cherukunnu Boys HS here, conducted a survey in the households near their school on energy consumption.Following a campaign based on their survey findings, there was a marked decline in power consumption in these houses, they say.Their model of desalination-cum-chemical plant was made on the basis of discussions at the school science club meetings.Products based on solar technology abound at the fair. The solar multi-utility vehicle developed by Liyana Subhan T., a Class VI student of Presentation School in Kozhikode stands out.Liyana says the vehicle can save energy at traffic blocks and can be used for irrigation.Anupriya K.A. and Anusree A., Class X students of the Rajiv Gandhi Memorial HSS, Panur, displayed a model of the plant that treats coffee waste.
Eco-friendly and cost-effective measures for conserving subsoil water constitute the research-type project of Rhea Thomas and Riya P.M., Class X students of Holy Family CHS, Thrissur.Rishikanth and Anu Vinod, Class IX students of Mar Elias HSS Kottappady, Ernakulam, demonstrate Newton’s third law using a water rocket.Aivin Cyriac and Jubin Joseph, Class X students of St. Joseph’s HS, Pulinkunnu, Alappuzha, showcase various species of fish and fish-catching implements as part of their project titled ‘Draining fish wealth of Kuttanad.’Eldhose Saju, Class X student of Mar Basil HSS, Kothamangalam, Ernakulam, has come up a device that generates electricity when vehicles ply over speed-breakers.He made the model after reading about a similar project in Japan.A washing machine by Anson Antony of St. Joseph’s School, Thrissur; automatic speed controller system designed by Don George and Abin M of Kaniyambatta HS, Wayanad; self-operating cleaning system by Josewin Johny and Aditya Joseph of MGM HSS, Manathavady; magnetically levitated windmill by Sneha P.R. and Salmanul Faris of Chakkalakkal HSS, Kozhikode; and hand wash system by Roshith R.K. and Varis, of Manjeri Boys GBHSS, are among the projects that attracted attention at the fair.
