Huang Rongming, 24,
was born with his ticker bulging from beneath a thin layer of skin on his
stomach. Doctors expected the rare disorder to kill him, and his peasant family
couldn’t afford the expensive operations he needed to give him a normal life.He
tried to hide his condition for years, but he was saved by finally going
public. A doctor persuaded Huang to tell his story to the media and ask for
donations toward surgery.It worked. Generous strangers chipped in about $9,800
in six days, and an anonymous donor gave Huang another $24,500 to cover the
bill.Doctors successfully completed the complex surgery in April.“It’s a dream
come true,” Huang said to the China Daily. “I’m going to lead a normal life like
everyone else.”Huang Rongming, 24,
was born with a heart that grew out of his abdomen without the protection of a
rib cage.Huang’s problem was
congenital heart displacement, a rare condition that affects between 5 and 8
people out of 1 million.
“It’s a miracle he is still alive,” said Dong
Niaguo, chief cardiac surgeon at Wuhan Union Hospital.Surgeons had to move
Huang’s heart up into his chest and encase it in a plastic shell, replicating a
rib cage.The surgery ended a lifetime of worry for Huang and his family.
Growing up, he couldn’t play with other kids for fear of injury. He’d turn blue
after only the slightest exercise from a lack of oxygen.“We lived in anxiety
when he was a little boy,” Huang’s mother Zhang Yuanfeng said.Chinese surgeons moved Huang Rongming’s heart
from his abdomen to its proper place and encased it in a rib-like plastic
shell.Huang had to be
carried to school by his mother."During PE lessons, I could only watch
from a distance,” he said. “Teachers were nice. Some kids showed sympathy, but
there were also some who laughed at me.”He dropped out at age 14, when he grew
too heavy for his mother to carry him.
He eventually took a
low-strain job packing shoes. Huang wore two layers of clothes and avoided
communal showers to hide his deformed body from co-workers.“I don't know how
they would react if they knew my heart was so different,” he said.Huang Rongming says he can live a normal life
now that surgeons have moved his heart into his chest.He eventually fell in love but ended the
relationship because his family thought it was wrong to snare the young woman
in a “futureless” romance.Friends finally persuaded him to see a doctor.He
underwent nearly 11 hours of open-heart surgery.“Time passed by so slowly when
he was in the operating theater,” father Huang Baojiang said. “An hour felt
like a year.”Doctors say the procedure was a success. His stomach is flat. His
heart functions well.
