As the  Thiruvananthapuram city zoo is experiencing a lack of space to accommodate the entire deer population, the Department of Museums and Zoos is planning to shift a good number of the animals to a separate enclosure being constructed inside the heritage museum at Wayanad, Minister for Museums and Zoos P.K. Jayalakshmi said.Talking to reporters after visiting the zoo to supervise the measures initiated in the wake of the outbreak of feline panleukopenia virus and the foot-and-mouth disease, she said space constraint was one of the biggest hurdles faced by the administration in providing a safe environment for the animals.
There had been an exponential growth in deer population, she said, adding that the department was awaiting completion of work on the separate enclosure in the heritage museum to shift the animalsThe enclosure would function as a rehabilitation centre for deer, The Minister added .The government was serious in implementing the 23 recommendations given by the expert committee to improve the prevailing condition at the zoo, the Minister said.
