Solar Panel scam: Shalu Menon was with Biju Radhakrishnan the day he escapedState police have confirmed that actress Shalu Menon was with Biju Radhakrishnan the day he escaped. Biju Radhakrishnan, the prime accused in the solar panel scam was alleged to have been with Shalu Menon and her mother in Thrissur the day Saritha Nair was arrested. It is also alleged that Shalu Menon is also involved in the solar panel scam involving Biju Radhakrishnan and Saritha Nair. According to the statements given by those questioned, Shalu Menon and Biju Radhakrishnan are alleged to have had close links. It has also been reported that Biju had introduced Shalu to those persons from whom he had taken money from, as the company's executive director. "Shalu had a vital role in the recruitment of staff for the company," said the statement recorded in Thiruvananthapuram city police station. Biju is said to have taken a room in a hotel in Thrissur under the name of Dr. Biju. He is said to have fled for Tamil Nadu immediately after reports of Saritha’s arrest came up.Police have launched an extensive search for Biju in Tamil Nadu, under the supervision of ADGP Hemachandran. The team consist of 6 DySPs.
The second accused in the solar cheating case Sarita S Nair was remanded till July 1 by the Perumbavoor court.  Perumbavoor DySP K Harikrishnan led Sarita S Nair to the court on Monday morning. Sarita did not react to the repeated requests from the media. On Sunday,15th June,2013, Sarita's Kakkanad rented residence was raided by the police and the police seized many cheque books.Team Solar had its office of Team Solar on Chittoor Road in Ernakulam.
There are several cheating cases against Saritha S Nair, the accused in the solar panel cheating case. There are two cases against her in the Medical College police station, one in Poonthura police station and one in the Museum police station. On June 3, Thampanoor police registered a case against Saritha’s friend Biju Radhakrishnan, 40, on charges of swindling Rs 29 lakh from a doctor. Biju, hailing from Kulanada, near Pandalam, swindled the money after acting as a middleman to purchase a windmill in Tamil Nadu. The case was registered on a complaint filed by Mathew Thomas, a retired doctor of the Medical College Hospital. The accused made the doctor believe that he was working in association with the ‘Anert’.
The cheating was done in the name of ‘Swiss Solar Company’, which Biju ‘owned’. Biju hired a room in a hotel at Thampanoor to run the office of the company. “Bjiu told the doctor that he was a 1990 batch IPS officer of the UP cadre and was on leave to work in the energy management field,” said Thampanoor CI Sheen Tharayil. Biju also gave advertisements in the media to promote his company. However, the office remained closed for the past several months. The police have intensified the search for Biju.
An unrelenting LDF opposition in Kerala on Saturday stepped up the demand for Chief Minister Oommen Chandy's resignation in view of "new revelations" in the "solar scam", a day after he sacked two of his staff members for alleged links with a woman accused in the financial fraud.Causing further embarrassment to Chandy, the absconding husband of Saritha Nair, arrested for financially cheating many people by offering to arrange solar panel agencies for them, told a Malayalam television channel that he had once met the chief minister to talk about his business.Speaking from an undisclosed location, Saritha's husband Biju Radhakrishnan also alleged that his wife's connections with former Forest Minister K B Ganesh Kumar was responsible for the collapse of his business and his family.
Biju, also an accused in the cheating case, said he was introduced to Chandy by Congress MP M I Shanawas.Countering the charge against him, Kumar, who was compelled to quit the cabinet a few months ago at the height of discord with his estranged wife, termed Radhakrishnan's claim as "concocted" and part of attempts by 'forest lobby' to prevent his re-induction into the UDF cabinet, in which he held the forest portfolio.Admitting that he had introduced Biju to Chandy, Shanawas said he had done that with good intentions as he thought that Biju was genuinely interested in solar business and he did not know anything about conduct of his business.
Seizing on the development, CPI(M) Politburo member Kodiyeri Balakrishnan wanted Chandy to step down as he had "concealed" from the state assembly then he had met Radhakrishnan.Chandy had yesterday sacked his Personal Assistant Tenny Joppan and removed gunman Salim Raj from his personal staff for making frequent telephone conversations with Saritha, who was arrested earlier this month. With the issue figuring in the state assembly, Chandy constituted a special team under ADGP (south zone) to probe the case including the suspected role of his two personal aides. Defence Minister A K Antony sought to downplay the solar panel scam linked to the office of Chief Minister. "Government has ordered an enquiry. Let the report come", he said.Asked about the controversy, Union minister Vayalar Ravi said everyone should be careful about whom they appoint as personal staff. Kerala PCC President Ramesh Chennithala said at Palakkad that the KPCC would state its 'political stand' on the issue after the investigation report was submitted.
Kerala Chief Minister Oommen Chandy, under severe criticism from the Left opposition over his staff members being in contact with a woman charged in several cheating cases, yesterday asked two of them to step down. “I have received a preliminary report of the investigating officer. Based on that, I am removing two of my staff members, and further action would be based on the probe report, once investigation is completed,” Chandy said in the assembly yesterday.Chandy’s personal assistant Teny Jopan - from whose mobile phone nearly 70 calls were made to the woman in a month’s time - and his security officer Salim Raj have been asked to step down till the probe is completed.

The Left had taken up the issue following the revelation by a TV channel a few days back of calls made to Saritha S Nair, a woman in police custody for involvement in several cheating cases. The TV channel revealed that the woman had easy access to Jopan and others in Chandy’s office.Since 2000, Saritha is alleged to have been involved in more than 13 cases of cheating. Her latest “scam” was under through Team Solar, a company believed to have cheated numerous people of crores of rupees on the promise of supplying solar panels and installing wind farms. The matter has been raised in the state assembly for the past three days.
After Chandy’s statement in the house, former home minister and CPI-M leader, Kodiyeri Balakrishnan, said the suspension alone would not suffice.“Chandy should step down and order a judicial probe into the entire episode. The so-called ongoing probe by an additional director general of police will not reveal anything. We demand that you should go; and we want a judicial probe,” Balakrishnan told Chandy before leading the opposition out of the house.
Meanwhile Home Minister Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan told reporters outside the assembly that the Left did not have a consistent stand on the issue. “Now they say the chief minister should step down and order a judicial probe. Legally, for any action to be taken an investigation has to be undertaken. That’s what’s going on now. That is the law of the land,” Radhakrishnan said. Salim Raj, the chief minister’s security officer who has been asked to step down, said he too had been duped by Saritha. Raj claimed he had only spoken to her because he wanted to learn about solar panels. “I am ready to face any probe. She cheated me too,” he said.
