The Pongala Mahotsavam of Attukal temple, the most popular festival of Kerala women, is being celebrated on Tuesday,26th February,2013. Attukal temple in Thiruvananthapuram is also called as Sabarimala of women and the festival is entered in Guinness book of world records as the largest women's congregation in the world.The major deity of the temple, Bhagavathi, is worshipped as the supreme mother, mighty preserver as well as destroyer of all. The Pongala, the main offering to the Bhagavati, is a special naivedya made by women. Traditionally, the festival is celebrated for ten days and on the 9th day the famous Pongala is being taken place. Hindu mythology says that Kannaki, heroine of Chilapatikaram, is devoted as Attukal Bhagavathi.Legend behind the origin of Attukal temple says the story of a godly blessing to a devotee in the place. The man was having bath in a river called Killiyar. A small girl came at the time and asked the man to help her to cross the bridge and he assisted her in crossing it. Then she brought her to his home and started arrangements to treat her. Meanwhile, the girl disappeared and then appeared in his dream while he was asleep. She instructed him to install her in the place where she showed and he built a small temple and consecrated the girl who is believed to be the incarnation of Bhagavathy. Now the temple in Attukal is situated in the place.

ലക്ഷക്കണക്കിന് സ്ത്രീകളാണ് പൊങ്കാലയിട്ടത്. 'സ്ത്രീകളുടെ
ശബരിമല' എന്ന് വിശേഷിപ്പിക്കുന്ന ആറ്റുകാല്‍ പൊങ്കാലയ്ക്ക്,
കടുത്ത ചൂട് വകവെയ്ക്കാതെയാണ് ലക്ഷക്കണക്കിന് സ്ത്രീകള്‍
അടുപ്പുകൂട്ടി അണിനിരന്നത്. പൊങ്കാലയില്‍ തീര്‍ത്ഥം തളിച്ച് നേദിക്കാന്‍ 250 ശാന്തിക്കാരെ നിയോഗിച്ചിരുന്നു. രാവിലെ ആറ്റുകാല്‍ ക്ഷേത്രതന്ത്രി

പകരുകയും ചെയ്തതോടെയാണ് ഭക്തിസാന്ദ്രമായ ചടങ്ങുകള്‍ക്ക് തുടക്കമായത്.
പണ്ടാരയടുപ്പില്‍നിന്ന് പകര്‍ന്ന തീനാളമാണ് ലക്ഷോപലക്ഷം അടുപ്പുകളിലേക്ക് എത്തിയത്. പത്തരയ്ക്ക് ക്ഷേത്രത്തില്‍നിന്ന് മൈക്ക് വഴിയുള്ള അറിയിപ്പും ചെണ്ടമേളവും കേട്ടശേഷം ഭക്തര്‍ അടുപ്പില്‍ തീ കൊളുത്താന്‍ ആരംഭിച്ചു.വ്രതശുദ്ധിയോടെ പൊങ്കാല അടുപ്പുകളൊരുക്കി സ്ത്രീകള്‍ തിങ്കളാഴ്ചതന്നെ തലസ്ഥാന നഗരം കൈയടക്കിയിരുന്നു. ക്ഷേത്രപരിസരം ഞായറാഴ്ച തന്നെ ഭക്തരെക്കൊണ്ട് നിറഞ്ഞിരുന്നു. ഭക്തര്‍ക്ക് എത്താനും മടങ്ങാനുമായി കെ.എസ്.ആര്‍.ടി. സി. പ്രത്യേക ബസ് സര്‍വീസുകള്‍ നടത്തുന്നുണ്ട്.
കുത്തിയോട്ടക്കാര്‍ക്കുള്ള ചൂരല്‍കുത്ത് വൈകീട്ട് ഏഴരയ്ക്കാണ്. 966 ബാലന്‍മാരാണ് ഇത്തവണ കുത്തിയോട്ട വ്രതമെടുത്ത് ദേവിയെ സേവിക്കുന്നത്. കുത്തിയോട്ടക്കാരുടെ അകമ്പടിയോടെ രാത്രി 10.15ന് പുറത്തെഴുന്നള്ളത്ത് നടക്കും. നെയ്യാണ്ടിമേളം, പഞ്ചവാദ്യം, തെയ്യം, കാവടി, പൂക്കാവടി, മയുരനൃത്തം തുടങ്ങിയവയൊക്കെ കുത്തിയോട്ടത്തെ അനുഗമിക്കും. ബുധനാഴ്ച രാവിലെ എട്ടിന് അകത്തെഴുന്നള്ളിപ്പ്. രാത്രി 8.30ന് കാപ്പഴിച്ച് കുടിയിളക്കും. തുടര്‍ന്ന് രാത്രി 12.30നുള്ള കുരുതി തര്‍പ്പണത്തോടെ ഉത്സവം സമാപിക്കും.
