ARANMULA BOAT RACE

The Aranmula Boat Race the oldest river boat fiesta in Kerala  , the south western State of India   is held during Onam (August-September). It takes place at Aranmula, near a Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Krishna   andArjuna .  The  snake boats move in pairs to the rhythm of full-throated singing and shouting watched by an exciting crowd.  In 1972, snakes boat races were also added to the program of the festival. Thousands of people gather on the banks of the river Pampa to watch the snake boat races. In 2009 forty one  snake boats or chundan  had participated in the festival. The oarsmen sing traditional boat songs and wear white mundu and turbans  . The golden lace at the head of the boat, the flag and the ornamental umbrella at the center make it a show of pageantry too.The famous regatta or snake boat race known as Aranmula Vallamkali is an extension of the popular Onam festival of Kerala in South India, taking place on the 4th day after Onam festivities end, during August/September.More than 30 snake boats, called chunadan vallams participate in the race. The race takes place in the holy river of Pamba and is connected with the famous Sree Parthasarathy Temple of Aranmula.This boat race is historic in origin and is still imbued with rituals. One thing special about this boat race is that the racing speed is not of much importance and is more a ritual.

Legend has it that a devout Brahmin vowed to offer all the requirements for the Thiruvona sadya (the grand Onam feast) at the Aranmula Parthasarathy Temple. Once the boat carrying these offerings, known as theThiruvona Thoni, was attacked by enemies. In order to protect the Thiruvona Thoni people from neighbouring areas sent their snake boats. Later on this practice evolved into an offering toLord Parthasarathyin the form of a snake boat race, held on theUthrittathiday and eventually became the Aranmula Boat Race.The Aranmula Boat Race is an integral part of the colorful Onam celebrations in Kerala. The boat race is held during the months of August or September, depending on the dates when Onam is celebrated. The boat race takes place in the town of Aranmula, which is located 128 km from Trivandrum.The festival involves 30-40 snake boats racing against each other on the Pampa River against the backdrop of the 1,700-year-old Aranmula temple. The temple is dedicated to Sree Parthasarathy, the incarnation of Lord Krishna in the form of Arjuna’s charioteer.

There is a local legend associated with the origins of the festival. A local Brahmin promised a huge feast to Lord Krishna at the Aranmula temple. However, his plans were spiked by his rivals who seized the boats loaded with provisions meant forthe feast. The Gods, however, intervened and sent down snake boats to chase the thieves and rescue the boats

 ആറന്മുള: ഉള്ളില്‍ ഭക്തിയും ഉടലില്‍ കാറ്റിന്‍വേഗവുമായി വന്നെത്തിയ പള്ളിയോടങ്ങള്‍ ആറന്മുളയെ പാലാഴിയാക്കി. പാര്‍ഥസാരഥി ക്ഷേത്രത്തിലെ പ്രതിഷ്ഠാദിനത്തിന്റെ മഹിമയില്‍ ഉത്രട്ടാതിയുടെ പുണ്യമേറ്റുവാങ്ങി അവ പാടിത്തുഴഞ്ഞു നീങ്ങവെ നതോന്നതയുടെ താളഭംഗിയില്‍ ഒരു ജനത ഭക്തിയിലലിഞ്ഞു. രണ്ടാംവട്ടവും എബാച്ചില്‍ ഇടശ്ശേരിമലക്കാര്‍ മന്നം ട്രോഫിയും ആര്‍.ശങ്കര്‍ട്രോഫിയും ഏറ്റുവാങ്ങവെ ഈ ജലമേളയും പൂര്‍ണം. ബിബാച്ചില്‍ തൈമറവുംകരയാണ് മന്നംട്രോഫി സ്വന്തമാക്കിയത്. പാടിത്തുഴഞ്ഞുവരവില്‍ പാരമ്പര്യത്തിന്റെ വഴികള്‍ കൈവിടാതെ കാത്തതിന് മാതൃഭൂമി ട്രോഫി എ ബാച്ചില്‍ ഇടനാട്, ഇടപ്പാവൂര്‍പേരൂര്‍, ചെറുകോല്‍, ഇടയാറന്‍മുള, കിഴക്കനോതറകുന്നേക്കാട് എന്നിവര്‍ ഉള്‍പ്പെട്ട ഏഴാം പാദത്തിലെ കരക്കാര്‍ നേടി. ഇതേ മികവോടെ ബിബാച്ചില്‍ രണ്ടാംപാദത്തിലെ കരക്കാരായ ആറാട്ടുപുഴ, മംഗലം, കോറ്റാത്തൂര്‍, കോടിയാട്ടുകര എന്നിവരും മാതൃഭൂമിയുടെ ട്രോഫി നേടിയെടുത്തു. ഈ ബാച്ചിനുവേണ്ടി ആറാട്ടുപുഴ ട്രോഫി ഏറ്റുവാങ്ങി. ഉത്രാടം തിരുനാള്‍ മാര്‍ത്താണ്ഡവര്‍മ്മ ഏര്‍പ്പെടുത്തിയ മഹാരാജ സമ്മാനം കോറ്റാത്തൂരും മേലുകരയും ഏറ്റുവാങ്ങി.എബാച്ചില്‍ രണ്ടും മൂന്നും സ്ഥാനക്കാരെ സംഘാടകസമിതി പ്രഖ്യാപിച്ചില്ല. ബിബാച്ചില്‍ രണ്ടാമതു വന്ന ഇടപ്പാവൂര്‍ ദേവസ്വം ബോര്‍ഡിന്റെ സമ്മാനം നേടി. മൂന്നാമത് തുഴഞ്ഞുവന്ന കോറ്റാത്തൂരിനാണ് ജില്ലാപഞ്ചായത്തുവക പുരസ്‌കാരം. തിരുവാറന്മുളയപ്പന്റെ അകമ്പടിക്കാരായ പള്ളിയോടങ്ങള്‍ തിരുവോണത്തോണിക്ക് പിന്നാലെ അലങ്കരിച്ച് പാടിത്തുഴഞ്ഞുവന്ന ജലഘോഷയാത്രയായിരുന്നു ഏറ്റവും ഹൃദ്യമായത്. ഹൈക്കോടതി ചീഫ് ജസ്റ്റിസ് മഞ്ജുള ചെല്ലൂര്‍ ഘോഷയാത്രയ്ക്ക് കൊടിവീശി. മുഖ്യമന്ത്രി ഉമ്മന്‍ചാണ്ടി ജലമേള ഉദ്ഘാടനം ചെയ്തു. മന്ത്രി അടൂര്‍ പ്രകാശ് അധ്യക്ഷത വഹിച്ചു. രാജ്യസഭാഉപാധ്യക്ഷന്‍ പി.ജെ.കുര്യന്‍, മന്ത്രിമാരായ എ.പി.അനില്‍കുമാര്‍, പി.ജെ. ജോസഫ്, വി.എസ്.ശിവകുമാര്‍ എന്നിവര്‍ പങ്കെടുത്തു. എന്‍.എസ്.എസ്.രജിസ്ട്രാര്‍ കെ.എന്‍.വിശ്വനാഥപിള്ള മന്നംട്രോഫി സമ്മാനിച്ചു. ആര്‍.ശങ്കര്‍ ട്രോഫി എസ്.എന്‍. ഡി.പി.കോഴഞ്ചേരി യൂണിയന്‍ സെക്രട്ടറി ഡി.സുരേന്ദ്രന്‍ വിജയിക്ക് കൈമാറി. മറ്റു സമ്മാനങ്ങള്‍ കെ.ശിവദാസന്‍ നായര്‍ എം.എല്‍.എ.യാണ് നല്‍കിയത്.
