PROFESORS SEEK TRANSPARENT PROBE IN TO BIHARI YOUTH SATNAM’S DEATH

PROFESORS SEEK TRANSPARENT PROBE IN TO BIHARI YOUTH SATNAM’S DEATH
A group of professors at Maharajas College, Ernakulam, has sought an intensive and transparent investigation into the death of the Bihari youth Satnam Singh at the Government Mental Health Centre at Peroorkada in Thiruvananthapuram. In a statement, the teachers said they feared that since the current investigation was headed by an officer whose daughter was a medical student at the Amrita Medical College, it would not be objective and bring out the truth. Susan John, P.V. Mathai, N. Shaji, K.K. Vijayan, P.K. Sreekumar and N.K. Vijayan, Associate Professors at Maharajas College, said that normally, police officers in such circumstances would keep off the investigation (because of conflict of interests.)
The professors noted that Satnam had stayed at the Narayana Gurukulam in Varkala for 20 days before going to visit the Amritananadamayi Math at Vallikkavu, near Kollam. At the ashram, he had recited “Bismillaahi…,” which he had learnt at an all-religion prayer meeting at the Narayana Gurukulam. The Math authorities, branding him as a terrorist because of his reciting an Islamic prayer, handed him over to the police. It was alleged that, the statement noted, Satnam was beaten up before being handed over to police. He was also assaulted at the mental health centre. They said it was a huge shame on Kerala that a dying Satnam had crawled up to a toilet in the hospital and had to lick dirty water on the floor to quench his final thirst.Referring to the post-mortem report, the professors pointed out that there were 77 wounds on Satnam’s body and 75 of them had been received in 24 hours before his horrible death.
