WORLD MILK DAY

WORLD MILK DAY (JUNE 1ST)

On the occasion of World Milk Day, on Friday, a two-day national-level seminar has been arranged in the state to promote dairy development in the state. The theme of the seminar is 'Status, opportunities and sustainability of dairy in Jharkhand'.
In the seminar, director of National Bureau of Animal Genetic Resources, Karnal, B K joshi informed that the state has 3.4% and 1.7% of country's total livestock and poultry respectively. Further data released by him revealed that the state depends on buffalo, cattle and goats for dairy production. The population of recognized breeds constitute about 30% of the total buffalo population and rest 70% buffalo population belong to the non descript category. The cattle population in Jharkhand counts up to 8.78 million and total buffalo population is 1.5 million. Besides, total milk production in the state is 1.9 million tonne, of which cows produce 52% and buffalo 42% of milk. There is a need to double the per capita milk availability which is 159gm.
Talking about the implementation of cattle and breed policy, Joshi said, "There are problems like acute shortage of genetically superior bulls, lack of coordination between agencies and effective animal husbandry extension network. There is need for strategic planning so that every aspect including the farmer's needs and resource availability is taken care of by the authorities concerned.Lastly, Joshi lauded the efforts of the state and said, "Regular mapping of animal health especially that of buffalo's should be done from time to time and policies should be framed based on the report. Semen banks should also be set up in the state."
Every year June 1st is celebrating as the world day of Milk. The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations which is an intergovernmental organization consisting of 191 Member Nations with the mission to make sure people have regular access to enough high-quality food to lead active, healthy lives started celebrating the first World Milk Day on June 1st, 2001. FAO has been working to raise levels of nutrition, improve agricultural productivity, better the lives of rural populations and contribute to the growth of the world economy since 1945. In 1996, representatives from many nations across the globe came together at the first World Food Summit with the goal to cut hunger in half by 2015. The work to achieve this goal propelled the creation of the UN Millennium Development Goals in 2000. These eight developmental goals relate to education, nutrition and environmental sustainability to ensure healthy foods to nourish every human being on the planet.

The June 1st celebration date was chosen due to the fact that many countries already celebrated a national milk day around this time. Milk is a near perfect food source loaded with nine essential nutrients needed daily to keep bodies healthy and strong. As an industry leader, DeLaval has been working to drive progress in milk production since 1883. Today, we provide sustainable dairy solutions for more than 1,000,000 dairy producers around the world – everyday. Making a difference in the lives of more than 852 million people worldwide who suffer hunger pains everyday is a huge undertaking. FAO believes no single individual, organization or sector can solve the problem alone; therefore DeLaval has partnered with FAO to help achieve the UN Millennium Development Goals. We share knowledge, pool resources and work together to create sustainable dairy solutions impacting our customers economically, socially, environmentally and with respect for animal welfare
