MAHI DECLARED DEAD AFTER STUCK IN BOREWELL FOR OVER 80 HOURS

Eighty hours after 4-year-old Mahi fell into a 68-feet-deep borewell Borewell in Manesar, the rescue team from the army succeeded in reaching the child on Sunday morning, though Mahi's health status is still unconfirmed.Mahi had fallen into the Borewell in Kho village near Manesar while playing with her friends on Wednesday night,22nd June,2012.On Thursday, the ill-equipped team was able to supply oxygen at a depth of up to 8 feet only. A 100-feet-long supply pipe was suspended only on Friday. Even army jawans who have been digging manually at a depth of 70 feet were not able to spend more than 15 minutes inside.A team of Gurgaon Rapid MetroRail was also called in with a big bore machine to aid the marathon rescue efforts that began at 6am on Thursday by the engineers from the army and National Security Guard (NSG) personnel.

According to the family the girl had had enough food before the accident. A small piece of cake and a glass of soft drink was all she had around 10pm on June 20.Meanwhile, the national child rights body has sought an explanation from the Haryana government to ascertain if it was the result of any negligence.In a letter to Haryana chief secretary, the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) sought to know if the Supreme Court guidelines on borewells had been followed in this case and the action taken by the state if any violation was found.Her father Neeraj Upadhyay, who hails from Aligarh, is a security supervisor at a factory in Manesar and was living in Kasan village with his wife Suman and Mahi's sibling.

“Mahi has been pulled out from the borewell...she is dead,” Gurgaon District Magistrate PC Meena said.Late Saturday night, rescuers had pierced a hard rock in their effort to reach the girl, trapped in the pit since June 20.The hard rock was a major hurdle which the rescuers had been struggling to break for the last three days. The slab was located in the horizontal tunnel between the borewell and the pit dug up to rescue the child.Mahi fell into the borewell at Kasan village near Manesar while playing with her friends on June 20, her fourth birthday.Over 100 officials drawn from army, fire, police, Gurgaon Rapid Metrorail, health and revenue departments, and locals were involved in drilling the pit parallel to the borewell.
