ACCIDENT FREE ZONE
Health Minister Adoor Prakash has said the Motor Vehicles Department (MVD) and the Police Department will jointly launch an intensive drive to enforce traffic rules in the district in the backdrop of increasing instances of road accidents. Talking to media persons here on Monday, the Minister said the decision was taken at a meeting attended by K. Sivadasan Nair, MLA; Babu George, president, Pathanamthitta district panchayat; A. Sureshkumar, municipal chairman; senior police officers, MVD officers, trade union leaders and leaders of various private bus operators' associations, and district authorities at the Collectorate in the afternoon.Mr. Prakash said a road accident at Koodal, near Konni, had claimed five lives a month ago and another accident at Vadasserikkara on Saturday claimed three lives.Many of the accidents were reportedly caused by human error. Steps would be taken to make the district an accident-free zone, he said. The meeting decided to cancel the driving license of the erring drivers who were caught thrice for driving the vehicle after consuming alcohol or using mobile phones while driving. The Minister said the phone numbers of the police and Motor Vehicles Department officers concerned would be displayed in buses for the passengers to complain in case such violations by the drivers came to their notice.
