LITERACY MISSION
"It has been 21 years since Kerala got 100% literacy but we still have a long way to go," said education minister P K Abdu Rabb. He was speaking at the inauguration of the Kerala State Literacy Mission (KSLM) workshop 'Vision & Mission' on Wednesday29 th March, 2012. The workshop was held to formulate new concepts and plans for widening the range of continuing education programme. "The workshop should come up with strategies for the optimal functioning of the mission through group discussions and debates," Rabb said. "The mission has been a huge success in Kerala and a plan to set up literacy mission centers in the Gulf countries too is on the anvil owing to the demand of the illiterate mass of Malayalis who had gone to the middle-eastern countries for construction work," he said. The workshop had a general session on topics like the scope of Continuing Education Programme, campaigning of continuing education programmes and integration of different department for an efficient working of the mission.
K Soman, assistant director of KSLM, Prabhakaran Pazhassy, former director of KSLM and K Aboobakr, former director of KSLM also spoke. "The forthcoming years should also implement programmes for the upliftment of women, minorities, scheduled castes and tribes," said former DPI Lida Jacob. "There are many women who are not aware of the opportunity before them, women who have given up their hope to go for higher education," said Jacob.
