WORLD TUBERCULOSIS DAY OBSERVED AT KOTTARAKARA KURAKAR CENTER

WORLD TUBERCULOSIS DAY OBSERVED AT KOTTARAKARA KURAKAR CENTER
MARCH-24
World Tuberculosis Day, falling on March 24 each year, is designed to build public awareness about the global epidemic of tuberculosis and efforts to eliminate the disease. Today tuberculosis causes the deaths of about 1.7 million people each year, mostly in the  poor countries. March 24 commemorates the day in 1882 when Dr Robert Koch astounded the scientific community by announcing that he had discovered the cause of tuberculosis, the TB bacillus. . At the time of Koch's announcement in Berlin, TB was raging through Europe and the Americas, causing the death of one out of every seven people. Koch's discovery opened the way toward diagnosing and curing tuberculosis. Tuberculosis is still an epidemic in many regions of the world, annihilating the lives of many millions of people each year. Each year, over nine million people around the world get infected with TB and almost two million TB related deaths are recorded worldwide. The actual figures must be far larger than this.
The Kottarakara based Kurakar Cultural Organization observed World Tuberculosis Day on 24 th March at Kurakar Town Center. A Health Seminar, an awareness rally followed by a public meeting marked the observance of the World TB Day. Prof. John Kurakar, President, Kerala Kavya Kala Sahithy presided over the public function.
