VEGETABLE FARMING SCHEME IN COLLEGES
Minister for Agriculture K.P Mohanan inaugurated Harithodhyam, a vegetable farming initiative under the Kerala State Horticulture Mission, at the LBS Institute of Technology for Women in the city on Wednesday.
Mr Mohanan said the scheme would succeed only if one could attract the youth to agriculture and youth to agriculture and provide them with sufficient training in farming activities. He encouraged the students to start homestead farming to experience the joy of reaping the produce cultivated on their own land. He distributed packets of seeds and saplings, and released a handbook on organic farming published by the state Horticulture Mission.
Presiding over the function,LBS Center for Science and Technology Director Sayed Rasheed said such initiatives would help reduce Kerala's dependence on other states for vegetables, and provide the people with the satisfaction of cultivating pesticide-free vegetables. the initiative is being taken up with the help of the mission in connection with the 10th annual day celebration of the College. The Mission will provide the necessary training and equipment, along with the seeds and saplings. The organizers have announced special prizes for the best students engaged in vegetable cultivation in Colleges. A seminar on " importance of organic gardening was also held.
