MULLAPERIYAR- POET D. VINAYACHANDRAN’S APPEAL TO TAMIL NADU

MULLAPERIYAR-
 POET D. VINAYACHANDRAN’S APPEAL TO
TAMIL NADU
Poet D. Vinayachandran has urged the people of Tamil Nadu to resolve the Mullaperiyar controversy amicably by accepting the need for ensuring the safety of the people of Kerala who live downstream the dam at Mullaperiyar. In a statement here on Tuesday, he said no person in Kerala would want to deny the people of Tamil Nadu the Mullaperiyar water. Kerala had all the right to build a new dam at Mullaperiyar without allowing the water to flow to Tamil Nadu. But a better solution would be to build a new dam to ensure the safety of the people of Kerala and enable Tamil Nadu to continue receiving the benefits of Mullaperiyar water, he said.
Mr. Vinayachandran termed as “distorted” the view expressed by certain politicians in Tamil Nadu that “Kerala's Idukki district should be attached to Tamil Nadu” because of the presence of Tamil population in the district. This view was as “ridiculous” as putting forward an argument that places in India with predominant Urdu population should be given to Pakistan, he said The poet said ancient historical facts would show that old Kerala extended from Kanyakumari in Tamil Nadu to Gokarna in Karnataka. The Chera kingdom was the largest among the Iron Age Tamil kingdoms under dynasties such as Chera, Chola, and Pandya. He said it was wrong to raise such arguments.
