IIST INVITED APPLICATIONS FOR B.TECH PROGRAMMES

IIST INVITED APPLICATIONS FOR B.TECH PROGRAMMES

The Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology (IIST) at Valiyamala in Thiruvananthapuram, which functions under the Department of Space of the Union government, has invited applications for a national-level admission test, ISAT 2012), for regular, residential B.Tech. programmes in aerospace engineering, avionics, and physical science. The applications can be submitted online on www.iist.ac.in/isat2012 till December 31. The test will be held from 9 a.m. to noon on April 21. The test centres include Thiruvananthapuram, Kozhikode, Chennai, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Visakhapatnam, Mumbai, Delhi, Nagpur, Lucknow, Ranchi, Varanasi, and Kolkata. The questions will be of objective type and will be in three sections of physics, chemistry, and mathematics. The detailed syllabus, similar to that of the Central Board of Secondary Education, will be given in the ISAT brochure. Sample questions can be accessed on the website.

The minimum academic qualification required is a pass in Plus Two or equivalent examinations in the first chance in 2011 with at least 70 per cent marks in aggregate in physics, chemistry, and mathematics (60 per cent for applicants belonging to the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes and those physically challenged).Seventy per cent marks in aggregate are required in the class 10 examination also (60 per cent for reserved sections). Those who appear for the final-year qualifying examination before July 1, 2012 may also apply.Only Indian citizens born on or after October 1, 1987 can apply (October 1, 1982 for reserved sections). The examination fee is Rs.600 (Rs. 300 for reserved sections).
Courses
Based on the ISAT score, students will be admitted to the 156 seats — 60 seats each in avionics and aerospace engineering and 36 for physical sciences. The avionics programme covers the syllabus of a typical electronics and communication programme and provides exposure to control and computer systems used in aerospace systems. Avionics means electronics used in aerospace systems. The course will help students specialise in areas such as power electronics, micro electronics, communication, control, and computing systems. The aerospace engineering course is designed towards the needs of Space technology and has a significant overlap with mechanical engineering, including mechanical design and manufacturing science. The course equips the students to specialise in flight mechanics, aerodynamics, propulsion, structure and design, and manufacturing science.

The physical science course is oriented towards application of basic sciences and mathematics in Space technology. The programme lays a strong foundation in physics, chemistry, and mathematics and gives exposure to important applications of Space technology, such as remote sensing, astronomy, and earth system sciences. The course helps the students specialise in areas such as atmospheric and ocean sciences, solid earth science, astronomy and astrophysics, remote sensing, and chemical systems. The institute may allow change of branch to a limited number of students at the end of the first year. The entire expenditure, including tuition fee and hostel and boarding fee, will be met by the IIST. In addition, a book allowance of Rs.3,000 is provided every semester to a student. However, if a student fails to score at least 60 marks in a semester will entail him or her to pay the hostel and establishment fee and medical cover charges for the next semester. The students who complete any of the three courses with minimum 65 per cent marks are assured of a job as scientist or engineer in the Indian Space Research Organisation and they are bound to serve it for minimum five years. The IIST is the first Space university in Asia.
