MULLAPERIYAR ALERT ISSUED –

WATER LEVEL TOUCHES 136 FEET

The water level at the Mullaperiyar dam touched 135.7 feet on Sunday morning,27^th November,2011. If the water level reaches 136 feet, the maximum level stipulated by the Central Water Commission, the excess water would overflow to the Idukki dam and hence the district collector issued an alert to the people living in the surrounding areas. Control rooms have been opened at the Collectorate, Peerumedu and Udubanchola taluq offices. The collector said that all have been set in place to deal with any kind of emergency.The district authorities issued the warning once the water level reached 135 feet. As the water level reached higher it has started overflowing into the spillway 1 and 2. Experts are visiting Idukki areas which was shaken by the mild tremor on Saturday.The water level touched a peak following incessant rains. Locals from Ayappankovil, Uppathara, Kanchiaru villages are holding a hartal on Sunday to immediately resolve the Mullaperiyar issue. Once the water level touches the 136 feet mark the water from the dam will be opened up through the spillway to the Idukki dam. The Idukki district collector has issued a warning to those who reside near the bank of the Periyar river.
