MATHRUBHUMI SEED BAGS
INTERNATIONAL AWARD
The Mathrubhumi Seed project, which endowed a new directive for environmental activities in Kerala, received international recognition at the conference of World Association of Newspapers and News Publications (WAN –IFRA) being held in Vienna. Mathrubhumi managing director MP Veerendrakumar and managing editor PV Chandran received the award at the function. Mathrubhumi has gained special recognition at the World Young Reader prize of World Association of Newspapers and News Publications (WAN -IFRA). WAN IFRA president and Malayala Manorama executive editor Jacob Mathew and WAN -IFRA young leadership executive director Arlin McCain, presented the award on 12th October,2011.
The Seed project of Mathrubhumi, implemented in schools in Kerala, achieved the honour. Mathrubhumi SEED gained special recognition of the jury in the section public service sector. The jury observed that the aim of Seed project is to make the student aware of environment protection and awareness. They said the efforts by Mathrubhumi are worth commendable and would be a model for other newspapers too. The 11-member jury comprising experts from various countries led by WAN -IFRA young leadership executive director Arlin McCain decided on the prizes. After receiving the award Veerendrakumar said that Mathrubhumi has taken up the great task of making the future generation knows the importance of environmental protection. The major problems faced by our earth are environmental problems. The rivers are drying up threatening the availability of potable water. In Kerala too, where there are 4 rivers, majority are getting polluted and dried. He said Mathrubhumi is a newspaper working on the principles of great Mahatma Gandhi and Mahathmaji was greatly aware of the importance of environmental protection. He said he is dedicating the award to all who are working behind the noble project.
