Old Boys' Association of Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) is celebrating the institution's founder, Sir Syed Ahmed Khan's, birthday on October 17.A pioneer in injecting modern and scientific spirit among Muslims in 19th century, Sir Syed is hailed as a great reformer and a Renaissance man.
The function, to be held at a five-star hotel in Andheri (E), will be chaired by state minority affairs minister Arif Naseem Khan and is expected to be a big draw for the AMU's alumni settled here. Hundreds of professionals who passed out from AMU are in Mumbai and they look forward to Sir Syed Day's annual function."Apart from the dinner, the function will also commemorate the services rendered by Sir Syed to India in general and Muslims in particular. It is an occasion when AMU's alumni meet and dine together to uphold the values of our alma mater," said
Rais Ahmed, general secretary of the AMU Old Boys Association (Mumbai), said that the purpose of holding Sir Syed Day function is not just eating sumptuous dinner butwas to debate the educational status of Muslims and chalk out programmes to empower the community.. "Initially a corpus of Rs 10 lakh is being set up which will be used in carrying out educational schemes for the students of poor sections. We will also take up the AMU's demand to establish its centre in Maharashtra. Kerala and West Bengal have already allotted the land while Bihar is in the process of giving the land for similar centres in those states," he added
