ENDOSULFAN BAN SHOULD BE LIMITED TO KERALA AND KARNATAKA
The Joint Council in its interim report submitted before the Supreme Court has said that the ban on the pesticide endosulfan should be limited to Kerala and Karnataka. Kerala will oppose the report at the court. The committee, headed by Indian Council for Medical Reasearh director general Viswamohan Katech, says that the chemical caused harm to human beings in the two states because of the unscientific way it was used. There aren't any complaints from other states on the use of the chemical and the states do not demand a ban on endosulfan, the committee says.
The pesticide is banned in Kerala and the state is in the process of implementing a rehabilitation and relief package for hundreds of persons who are suffering due to various illnesses caused as a result of spraying endosulfan in cashew plantations in the state.
